A Flair for the Dramatic...Akron and Trenton were locked in a 1-1 stalemate for eight innings last night, but Aeros 2B Brandon Pinckney roped a two-run double off Thunder reliever Oneli Perez for the winning margin as Akron evened this five-game series at two wins apiece with a 3-1 triumph. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren earned the win with 1.1 innings of hitless relief, improving to 2-5 on the season. Then native of Burlingame, CA entered into a tough situation in the bottom of the eighth, inheriting a runner at second base from starter Scott Lewis and then issuing an intentional walk before striking out switch-hitter Ramiro Pena to douse the threat. Lofgren the worked a perfect ninth to lock down his first win since May 1st (a start at home against the Erie SeaWolves).
Pinck is the New Black...Pinckney's winning two-base hit capped another superior night for the former Sacramento City College star, as he finished 3-4 and collected RBIs five and six in the series. Pinckney is hitting .455 (5-11) in the series and .478 (11-23) over the first six games of this roadtrip, raising his season batting average 17 points from .275 to .292 entering play this afternoon. He has hit in seven of his last eight games, and has produced five multi-hit efforts in his last six games. Pinckney slipped to a .258 average in July after hitting better than .300 in both May and June, but has rebounded to hit .394 (13-33) with a double, a home run, seven runs scored and six RBI in just nine games in the month of August. Perhaps even more amazing is the fact that the notoriously free-swinger has worked four walks this month alone, after earning only five walks in his first 67 games. Prior to this walking binge, Pinckney had walked a grand total of once in his previous 36 games. All the free passes have raised his on-base percentage to .459 for the month.
This and That...SS Josh Rodriguez laid down a pair of sacrifice bunts last night, the first Aero with two sacrifices in one game this season. The native of Houston, TX now leads the club with seven sacrifices on the year...Speaking of Rodriguez, he became the first Akron player to reach the century mark in terms of starts by batting order Friday night. He hit second in the lineup for the 100th time in game two of the doubleheader split. 3B Wes Hodges remains the lone Aero to make at least 100 starts at one position, with 108 at the hot corner...While we're on the subject of Hodges, his RBI hit last night gave him 85 on the season, making him just the eighth player in franchise history to reach that mark and the first since Victor Martinez finished the year with 85 RBI in 2002. Hodges, of course, still has roughly three weeks to go, and the single-season franchise record of 96 (set by Chan Perry in 1997) is well within reach.
Did You Know...The Aeros won for just the 16th time all season when scoring three runs or less last night.
