
Gonzalez and Trenton Walk-Off with 3-2 Win Over Akron

(Trenton, NJ)- Pinch Hitter Edwar Gonzalez hit the game-winning three-run home run to give Trenton a 3-2 victory over Akron on Sunday afternoon from Waterfront Park. Trenton won the rubber game of the series, and the season-series over the Akron 4-3.
With Trenton down 2-0 in the ninth inning, Third baseman Chris Malec reached on an infield single with one out against Akron reliever Reid Santos. After Left fielder Colin Curtis popped up for the second out, Catcher P.J. Pilittere walked to put runners at first and second base with two outs. Gonzalez was then inserted to pinch-hit for Trenton First baseman Cody Ehlers. Gonzalez sent the first pitch over the right-field wall for his ninth home run of the season, and lifted Trenton to a 3-2 win. Thunder reliever Zach Kroenke (6-0) picked up the win as he went three shutout innings of relief, and did not allow a hit. Santos (2-1) took the loss as he allowed two hits and three earned runs in 1 2/3 innings.
Akron jumped on top with a run in the third inning. Center fielder Jose Constanza singled to start the frame against Trenton Starting pitcher Steven White. Constanza then proceeded to steal second and third base on consecutive pitches. He scored the first run of the game on an RBI groundout by Second baseman Josh Rodriguez. Constanza finished the game with three stolen bases, tying a season-high for Akron. The Aeros made it 2-0 in the fourth inning. Left fielder Nathan Panther walked, stole second base, and moved to third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, he scored on an RBI triple by Akron Shortstop Brandon Chaves.
Akron Starting pitcher Frank Herrmann went 7 1/3 innings and allowed only four hits. He struck out eight and walked two in a no-decision. White also received a no-decision as he allowed two runs and two hits in 3 2/3 innings . He walked five in his second straight game for the Thunder. Thunder reliever Kevin Whelan hurled 2 1/3 shutout innings and only gave up one hit. He struck out five. Third baseman Chris Malec had two of Trenton's six hits, including a double.
Trenton is off on Monday. Carl Pavano will be making his second rehabilitation start for the Thunder on Tuesday night at Waterfront Park against the Bowie Baysox, the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Pavano allowed just one hit in 3 2/3 innings on Thursday night against Akron. He struck out four and walked two. At one point, he retired seven batters in a row. Pavano will be opposed by Bowie RHP Jason Berken (10-3, 3.74). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
