'Wolves Power Past 'Cats

The SeaWolves scored nine unanswered runs on Saturday night to take down the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the middle game of a three-game series at Jerry Uht Park.

The Fisher Cats jumped ahead in the top of the second inning. With one out, Jacob Butler homered to left for his eighth long ball of the season. The homer put the 'Cats up 1-0.

New Hampshire would strike again in the top of the third. Kyle Phillips led off with a base knock and Scott Campbell walked to put a pair on for Aaron Mathews. Mathews grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Phillips, putting the 'Cats up 2-0. Travis Snider then singled to put a pair on for Ryan Patterson. Patterson singled home Mathews for a 3-0 lead. Jacob Butler followed with a two-run double, putting New Hampshire ahead 5-0.

The 'Wolves responded in the bottom of the third against New Hampshire starter Brett Cecil. Erie had the bases loaded on Cecil in the second but could not covert, that would change in the third. Will Rhymes led off the inning with a single to left and Danny Worth walked to put a pair on for Jeff Frazier. Frazier singled to load the bases for Ryan Roberson. Roberson grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Rhymes, making it a 5-1 game in favor of the 'Cats. Dusty Ryan struck out for the second out bringing Kody Kirkland to the plate. Kirkland connected on the second of his three hits in the game, scoring Worth, cutting the New Hampshire lead down to three at 5-2. Justin Justice walked to reload the bases for Casper Wells. Cecil plunked Wells on the foot, bringing home the third Erie run of the inning, making it 5-3. Cecil would exit after the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Fisher Cats made the call to the pen, bringing in reliever Seth Overbey. Overbey retired the first batter of the inning on a strikeout. Worth followed with a double. Frazier then grounded to short and on the play, Chris Gutierrez made an error allowing both runners to reach safely, giving Erie runners on the corners for Roberson. Roberson singled home Worth to make it a one-run game at 5-4. Ryan then stepped in and gave Erie the blast they were looking for as he connected on his ninth home run of the season. The two-run shot put the 'Wolves ahead for the first time in the game at 6-5.

The score would remain the same until the bottom of the seven when, with two outs, Joe Tucker put the SeaWolves ahead 7-5 with a solo home run to left.

Erie added two more runs to put the game away in the bottom of the eighth. Frazier singled with one out bringing Roberson to the dish. Roberson doubled off the wall in right, scoring pinch runner Deik Scram for an 8-5 lead. Ryan then singled home Roberson with his third hit of the game, giving the 'Wolves a 9-5 lead.

Fritz (2-2) picked up the win for the 'Wolves, it was his first win since April 22. He went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Brendan Wise tossed three scoreless innings, allowing one hit in relief of Fritz and Casey Fien tossed a perfect ninth to preserve the win.

The win insured the SeaWolves of their first non-losing season series against New Hampshire since 2005.
