Suspended Game's Situation...Portland leads 1-0, top of 3rd inning, Andrew Pinckney batting, bases loaded, 0-2 count.
Packing a Punch...The Aeros slugged their way to a 13-6 victory over New Hampshire Thursday, completing their second straight sweep and extending their winning streak to eight games in a row. The Aeros tied a season-high with four home runs on the night and LHP Scott Lewis earned his second win in as many starts with Akron, tossing 6.2 innings and giving up just two runs on five hits, while walking none and striking out five. 3B Wes Hodges, RF Bronson Sardinha, and C Chris Gimenez all doubled and homered, and DH Ryan Goleski homered for the third straight night to provide the bulk of Akron's offense. The 3-8 hitters (Gimenez, Hodges, Sardinha, 1B Matt Whitney, Goleski, and SS Brandon Chaves) were a combined 15-25 (a .600 batting average) with three doubles, four home runs, 11 runs scored, and a1l 13 RBI. The Aeros have now reached double-digit hit totals in each of their last nine games (121 total hits for an average of 13.4 hits per game).
Winning Streak...This current eight-game winning streak is Akron's longest since a 10-game streak from June 3rd to June 14th in 2006 when the Aeros beat up on Erie, New Britain, and Connecticut to go from a half-game out of first to a five-game lead as the division leaders. The 2008 Aeros have climbed from third place and 4.5 games back to second place, just 1.5 games back of division-leading Bowie (the teams are tied in the loss column).
During the Streak...It has been the offense that has carried the Aeros during this eight-game tear. Here are some numbers to digest from the streak: The Aeros are hitting .368 (111-302) with 68 runs (8.5 per game), 17 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 45 walks, and just 47 strikeouts. Akron has three of the top five hitters in the Eastern League in June: Chris Gimenez is second in the league in batting average at .500 (17-34), Ryan Goleski is fourth hitting .419 (13-31), and Matt Whitney is fifth with a .405 average (15-37). Bronson Sardinha is also tied for second in the Eastern League with 11 RBI in June, and with Portland coming to town for the weekend prospects are good that the Aeros can continue to roll; Akron hit .339 (39-115) and scored 24 runs in the three-game series against the Sea Dogs last weekend in Portland.
Gimeney Cricket!...Chris Gimenez, the Eastern League's leader in on-base percentage, carries a nine-game hitting streak into the weekend. During the streak he is hitting .548 (17-31) with 10 walks and is getting on base at a .659 clip. On the year, he gets on base nearly half the time (.498) and leads the league in walks (50) and is fourth in the E.L. with a .342 average.
