Defenders Fall 4-1

June 14, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- It was a drizzly, muggy evening at the Dodd and the Defenders looked sluggish for the second night in a row as they fell to the Altoona Curve, 4-1.

The Curve started right where they left off in Friday's contest as they put a run across the board in the first on an RBI double off the bat of Anthony Webster as Altoona took an early 1-0 advantage.

Altoona got back to their scoring ways in the third inning as Melvin Dorta came home on a wild pitch by Nate Bump and Ryan Corely touched home on a run scoring single by Jason Bowers to make it 3-0 Curve.

The Defs answered back in the home half of the third as Adam Witter delivered a single with Travis Ishikawa on second to cut the lead to 3-1.

A solo shot over the left field fence off the lumber of Miguel Perez to lead off the fourth extended the lead back to three runs as the Curve grabbed a 4-1 advantage.

Five innings of zeroes followed in the line score as both bullpens sparkled in relief of the shaky starting pitching. Josh Sharpless, Just Hedrick and Brooks McNiven dealt effective baseball as they combined to shutout the Curve through five innings, scattered two hits, walked three and struck out four.

Tickets are available for the Father's Day contest between the Defenders and Curve at 1:05pm at Dodd Stadium. For more information visit ctdefenders.com or call the front office at (860) 887-7962.
