
Sea Dogs drop pair in Akron

(Akron, OH) - The Portland Sea Dogs (37-30) were beaten by the Akron Aeros (39-26) twice on Saturday night at Canal Park. In game one, Akron defeated Portland 4-2 in the completion of Friday night's suspended game. In game two, the Aeros smacked out 12 hits to cruise to a 12-2 victory.
Portland has lost four straight and 10 of their last 13 games. Akron grabbed sole possession of first place in the Southern Division and has won 10 straight games.
The two teams resumed the suspended game in the top of third inning with the Sea Dogs leading 1-0. Andrew Pinckney was at the plate with an 0-2 count and struck out against Reid Santos with the bases-loaded. The 'Dogs scored the game's first run on Friday night when Ryan Khoury delivered a two-out, run-scoring single.
Jeff Corsaletti added a sac-fly in the fifth inning to put Portland in front 2-0 but Akron rallied back for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Daniel Haigwood issued a two-out walk to Wes Hodges and Bronson Sardinha followed with a 2-run homer to right field.
The Aeros scored twice off losing pitcher Miguel Asencio (1-3) in the eighth inning. Hodges snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single and Sardinha cracked a sacrifice fly.
J.D. Martin (5-3) worked 2.1 scoreless frames to pick up the win and former Red Sox farmhand Randy Newsom notched his 19th save (league leader) with a perfect ninth.
In game two, the Aeros scored seven times in the fourth inning to beat Dave Gassner (0-1). Ryan Khoury committed two throwing errors at third base that led to five unearned runs during the inning.
Frank Hermann (5-3) fired six strong innings on five hits and two runs to pick up the win. Gassner was touched for eight hits, seven runs (four earned) over 3.1 IP.
Mickey Hall went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Bubba Bell and Iggy Suarez provided the RBI's.
Akron took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with three straight singles off Gassner. Chris Gimenez cracked the third single, which scored Crowe. Brandon Pinckney snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI bloop-single in the third inning. The Aeros sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth inning, picking up a big 2-run single by Damaso Espino.
Portland looks to salvage the final game of the 3-game series on Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:05 PM at Canal Park. LHP Kris Johnson (3-3, 4.00) goes to the hill for Portland and LHP Ryan Edell (3-4, 4.52) gets the starting nod for Akron.
