Wolves earn league honor with Sterling milestone
April 2, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
Chicago Wolves left wing BRETT STERLING has been named the recipient of the CCM/AHL Milestone of the Month award for March after becoming just the fifth first-year player in American Hockey League history to record 50 goals in a season.
The 22-year-old rookie became the third player in franchise history to hit the 50-goal plateau with a marker in the second period of the Wolves' 5-4 victory over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights at the Omaha Civic Auditorium on March 16. STERLING also picked up two assists and posted a team-high eight shots in that contest, which came on the heels of his third three-goal performance of the season two days earlier on March 14.
The Los Angeles native, who was named MVP of the 2007 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Game and earned back-to-back AHL Rookie of the Month honors in November and December, leads the league with 52 goals in 72 outings - the fifth-highest single-season total in franchise history and the most by a Chicago player in eight years - and ranks second overall with 93 points behind linemate DARREN HAYDAR. He also paces the AHL with 21 power-play goals and ranks second with 262 shots this season.
STERLING, who has already shattered the single-season franchise records for goals and points by a rookie, tallied 17 points (8G, 9A) in 13 games during the month of March, 16 of which were collected during a season-high, 10-game point streak from March 10 to 30. He has posted three of Chicago's six hat tricks this season and has notched multiple points in a game on 26 occasions. He also established a franchise record for the Wolves by notching a marker in nine consecutive games from Dec. 12 to Dec. 29, registering 13 during that span.
In recognition of his achievement, STERLING will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Wolves home game.
