With a Little Help, RiverDogs Win Again

CHARLESTON, SC - Mason Williams scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Charleston RiverDogs the lead on their way to an 8-5 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats in South Atlantic League action on Wednesday night in front of 2,981 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park

The RiverDogs are now to 43-31 (4-3 in the second half) with their fourth straight win and can sweep the series with a win Thursday. Savannah's loss puts them at 42-32 (1-6 in the second half).

Mason Williams and Ben Gamel started the inning with singles against reliever Randy Fontanez (1-1) and Tyler Austin walked to load the bases. Williams then scored on an error by left fielder Dustin Lawley, who dropped a fly ball. Later in the inning, another error brought in two more runs for some insurance. Mariel Checo (7-1) picked up his team-high seventh win of the year by striking out the side in the top of the eighth and finished the game by pitching the ninth.

"Another great win, fell behind early, but again we were able to battle back," said RiverDogs manager Carlos Mendoza. "Castillo hit a big two run homer. The bullpen gave us four scoreless innings. That was another nice job by everybody."

Camden Maron immediately put Savannah up 2-0 in the first when he drilled a pitch from starter Wilton Rodriguez over the right field wall for a two-run homer, his second of the year. In the third, Ali Castillo (1-3, HR, RBI, run) tied the game with a two-run bullet over the left field wall for his second home run of the year.

The game stayed even at two until the sixth, when the Sand Gnats played long ball again on Aderlin Rodriguez's (1-3, HR, RBI, run) three-run homer to right to make the score 5-2 and knock Wilton Rodriguez from the game.

For the second straight night, though, the RiverDogs mounted a comeback. Tyler Austin (1-3, 2 runs) doubled to start the seventh and after Gary Sanchez reached on an error, Dante Bichette, Jr. grounded a double past third and into the left field corner, scoring both runners. After moving to third on a flyout, Bichette tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Cito Culver.

BALLAPARK FUN: A thrilling edition of McDonald's sumo wrestling got the crowd up and excited just before the start of the eighth inning as both combatants battled to draw.

COMING UP: In the final game of this four game series, Charleston will send RHP Scottie Allen (2-5, 5.55 ERA) to the mound and he'll face RHP Jacob DeGrom (3-1, 2.70 ERA). The Ashley View Pub will have $1 beers for Thirsty Thursday along with food and drink specials and another night of DJ Natty Heavy.
