POWER REPLAY: West Virginia beat Lakewood 9-5 on Tuesday to end a three-game slide. Each team scored twice in the first inning. The Power added three in the third on an error, four singles, and a sac fly, and scored two more in the fourth on Alen Hanson's 11th home run of the year. Gregory Polanco's 11th home run of the season keyed a two-run eighth for a 9-2 lead. Lakewood capped the scoring with three runs off the Power bullpen in the bottom of the eighth. Zack Dodson notched his second straight quality start and victory. Polanco had three hits, three steals, three runs scored, and three runs batted in.
KEEP 'EM COMING: Jose Osuna has hit safely in his last nine games dating back to June 15 and looks to be the third Power player with a double-digit hitting streak this season. Alen Hanson hit safely in 16 straight during April and Gregory Polanco had an 11-game streak in early to mid-May. Osuna is batting .289 during this streak with 11 hits over 38 at bats.
STILL STREAKING: Eric Avila and Alen Hanson each had one hit last night and are riding seven game hitting streaks into tonight's game. Avila is hitting at a .440 clip over his last seven with 11 hits in 25 at bats. Hanson is batting .400 during his last seven and in on his fourth hitting streak of six games or more this season.
BACK TO THE FUTURE(S): Former Power pitcher Jameson Tallion was selected to participate in the 2012 Futures Game during the Major League Baseball All-Star festivities in Kansas City on July 8. Tallion went 2-3 with a 3.98 ERA for West Virginia last year and is 4-6 with a 4.10 ERA for Bradenton this season. He will be joined on the U.S. roster by fellow Pirates Prospect Gerrit Cole. Tallion would be the first former Power player to appear in a Futures Game since Starling Marte in 2010. Chase d'Arnaud was selected last year but could not play due to a Major League promotion.
ORGANIZATIONAL TREND: West Virginia pitchers have hit 76 batters this season and lead all full season teams in the category regardless of level. The Bradenton Marauders (50) and Altoona Curve (44) also lead their respective leagues in hit batters.
FIRST TIME AT FIRSTENERGY: The Power continue their first trip to FirstEnergy Park this evening at 7:05 pm. West Virginia trails the all-time series 53-45 and have gone 19-22 on the road in the matchup since 2005. Of the 14 games remaining this season between West Virginia and Lakewood, five will be played in New Jersey. The BlueClaws will be in Charleston for a five game series starting on July 4.
PROMO UPDATE- JULY 4: West Virginia's next BIG 12 promotional night is July 4 at 7:05 pm against Lakewood. The team will host appearances by Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, and Foofa from Yo Gabba Gabba. The evening will end with a post game fireworks show.
POWER POINTS: 41 percent of West Virginia's second half schedule will be played against the Lakewood BlueClaws and Delmarva Shorebirds... The Power's win Tuesday was just their fourth in 43 games when being outhit by the opponent... Gregory Polanco became the first Power player to steal three bases in a game this season... Rumor has it that Phillies All-Star first baseman Ryan Howard will make a rehab appearance for Lakewood on Thursday night in the series finale against the Power... Eric Fryer (WV Power- 2008) was added to the Pirates 40-man roster Tuesday and recalled to Pittsburgh. Starting catcher Rod Barajas is day-to-day with an injury.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell for the third straight day, losing 5-4 at Philadelphia... Indianapolis lost 4-3 against Toledo... Altoona dropped an 8-3 final at Harrisburg... Bradenton lost 12-3 at Dunedin... State College lost a 3-1 final at Batavia. Luis Heredia allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings in the loss.
