Suns' Five-Run Seventh Sinks Shorebirds, 8-4

Shorebirds, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (0-6) gave up five runs in the seventh inning and topped the Hagerstown Suns (5-2) 8-4 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Shorebirds have lost nine straight games dating back to the first half.

The Shorebirds struck first in the third inning. Sammie Starr led off by blasting his second home run of the season over the left-center field wall. Two batters later, Glynn Davis reached on a double. Then, with two outs, Jason Esposito singled home Davis to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the third. Wynston Sawyer reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Mychal Givens singled through the right side of the infield to score Sawyer.

The Suns got on the board in the fifth inning. Bryce Ortega and Brian Goodwin hit back-to-back singles to open the inning. With runners at second and third, Billy Burns hit a sacrifice fly to right field to trim the deficit to 3-1. The next batter, Cutter Dykstra, singled to pull the Suns within 3-2.

Shorebirds starter Zach Davies went five innings and allowed five hits and two runs. He struck out six batters, one short of his career high.

Hagerstown exploded for five runs in the seventh inning. With two outs and two aboard, Matt Skole connected on his league leading 18th home run of the year to give the Suns a 5-3 lead. The Suns added runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Justin Miller and an error on Sawyer at first.

The Shorebirds cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh. Givens singled to open the inning and Davis doubled him to third. Then, Brenden Webb swung and missed a third strike that rolled through the legs of Jeremy Mayo, allowing Givens to score.

The Suns bullpen retired the final nine batters of the game to close out the Shorebirds.

Jesse Beal took the loss over two innings of relief. He yielded four hits and four earned runs.

The Shorebirds and Suns play game four of the series on Thursday night at 7:05pm. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez will toe the rubber.
