August 12, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Appleton, WI. - Things were looking good for the Burlington Bees (14-30,44-69) as they held a four run lead over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (24-23,55-61) entering the bottom of the ninth. However, magic was on the side of the Timber Rattlers last night, as they rallied to beat the Bees 7-6. Carlos Herrera (3-6) earned his third win for his three innings of work out of the bullpen, where he allowed two runs on four hits, and struck out four. Anfernee Benitez (3-2) suffered his second loss after allowing Wisconsin to come back, allowing five runs, three of them earned on three hits and two walks in just two thirds of an inning.

Bees jump ahead after four walks

Wisconsin's starter Wilfred Salaman managed to work his way out of jams in the first two innings but didn't have the same luck in the third. Salaman walked Torii Hunter to lead off the inning, and then walked Orlando Martinez and Spencer Griffin to load the bases with one out. Salaman did strikeout Keinner Pina for the second out, but walked Tim Millard with the bases loaded, giving Burlington a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin takes lead thanks to three straight hits

Zach Clark got things going for the Timber Rattlers in the fifth with a one out single and Kenny Corey followed him with a single of his own to put runners on first and second. Bees starter Oliver Ortega then tried picking off Clark at second, but the throw went into center field to allow both runners to advance. Gabriel Garcia then delivered the tying run on a single to right, and Nic Pierre hit a deep fly ball to center for a sacrifice fly to score Corey, giving Wisconsin a 2-1 lead.

Bees answer in sixth

Pina led the sixth inning off with a single to left for Burlington, and Kiki Menendez delivered his second hit of the game for a one out single to put runners on first and second. Alexis Olmeda then drew a walk to load the bases, and Julio Garcia lined a single to right that would score both Pina and Menendez to get the Bees back in the lead. Hunter then hit a grounder to third and was thrown out at first, but Olmeda was able to score on the groundout to give the Bees a 4-2 lead.

Bees add insurance runs in eighth and ninth

Herrera thought he had gotten Menendez to strikeout for the second out in the top of the eighth, but his wild pitch was a bit too wild and it allowed Menendez to reach first. Olmeda then delivered a single to put runners on first and second, but a strikeout from Garcia gave Herrera the second out of the inning. Hunter came up big though, driving in his second run of the game on a single right, giving Burlington a 5-2 lead.

Burlington added another run in the ninth, thanks to a leadoff triple from Martinez for his first of the year. Pina then drove him in on a single to center to make the score 6-2 Bees. Pina managed to advance to second on a wild pitch, but Millard and Menendez couldn't find a way to drive him in.

Wisconsin rallies to score five in ninth

After a great game from Mayky Perez, the Bees went to Benitez to get three outs to secure a Bees victory. Things started off rough for Benitez, as he gave up a leadoff single to Eddie Silva, and a one out single to KJ Harrison to put runners on the corners with one out. Benitez then threw a wild pitch, which allowed Silva to score, making the score 6-3. After allowing a walk to Payton Henry, Clark lined out to Griffin in left for the second out. Corey managed to keep Wisconsin alive though after delivering a single to left that allowed Harrison to score, making the score 6-4.

Benitez then walked Garcia to load the bases and that was all we saw from Benitez as the Bees put in James Ziemba. Ziemba got two quick strikes on Nic Pierre and then got Pierre to swing and miss for the third strike. However, Ziemba's pitch hit the dirt and went way to the left on Pina behind the plate, and Pierre took off for first. Henry crossed the plate as Pina threw down to first, but his throw went over the head of Menendez and into right field. Corey scored without a play to tie the game, and Wisconsin decided to send Garcia to try to win the game. The throw from Martinez was a great one hopper to home, but the tag from Pina was about a half second late, as Garcia scored the game winning run to give Wisconsin a 7-6 win.

Ortega and Perez dominate

Although it was a heart breaking loss for the Bees, Oliver Ortega and Mayky Perez's performances can't be over looked. Ortega went five innings, allowed two runs, one earned on five hits, allowed no walks, and struck out five. Perez dominated through three innings of work, where the only base runner he allowed was a walk to Tristen Lutz, and he struck out five total, and all five came in a row when Perez struck out the side in the seventh, and the first two hitters in the eighth.

Silva continues great hitting for Wisconsin

Eddie Silva has only been with the Timber Rattlers for ten games, but he may the spark they need to make a run at the post season. Silva is currently on a seven game hitting streak and has had two hits in four straight games. Silva is hitting .405, with a .450 on base percentage, has 15 total hits, four doubles, and four RBI's in 37 at bats.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to stop their losing streak, as they will head south to Illinois to take on Kane County. The Bees beat Kane County in two of the three games they played at Community Field and will look to have similar success against them on the road. The Bees haven't announced an expected starter, but Kane County is expected to start Mack Lemieux. Lemieux was the one who started the game last Sunday, where he allowed eleven runs. His stats on the season are 2-9 with a 4.23 ERA in 22 starts.
