Bees Fall in Extras for Third Straight Loss to Wisconsin

Appleton, WI. - The Burlington Bees (14-29,44-68) had another long battle with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (23-23,54-61), but the Bees suffered another loss, losing 5-4 in eleven innings. Clayton Andrews (4-0) won his fourth game in just his eighth appearance with Wisconsin, pitching the final two innings, allowing an unearned run in the tenth, and striking out three. Eduardo Del Rosario (2-3) suffered his third loss after allowing a run in the tenth that allowed the Timber Rattlers to tie the game, and another run in the eleventh to give Wisconsin the win.

Bees strike for a pair in the third

Alvaro Rubalcaba started the third inning off with good patience at the plate, drawing a four pitch walk to give the Bees a leadoff runner. Torii Hunter then drove a hit into right for a single, allowing Rubalcaba to reach third, leaving Burlington runners at the corners with no outs. Leonardo Rivas got Burlington on the board with his second hit of the game, hitting a single to left to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout from Orlando Martinez, Kevin Williams Jr lined a single into right that allowed Hunter to score from second, putting Burlington up 2-0.

Lara drives in three with one swing

Eddie Silva led the fourth inning off with a single for Wisconsin, but Denny Brady was in good shape after he retired the next two hitters, making the situation a runner on first with two outs. However, Brady hurt himself after hitting Chad McClanahan with a pitch, and walking Zach Clark to load the bases. That set up Gilbert Lara,to drill his 20th double of the season to center field, driving in all three runners on base, putting Wisconsin up 3-2.

Griffin's triple helps Bees tie game in eighth

Spencer Griffin gave the Bees a huge hit to start the top of the eighth, hitting his sixth triple of the season to give Burlington a runner on third with no outs. Keinner Pina drew a full count walk to put runners on the corners, and Tim Millard grounded to short, where Wisconsin managed to get Pina at second, but Griffin was able to score, tying the game at 3-3.

Bees take lead on wild pitch

After neither team managed to score a run in the final inning and a half of regulation play, the Bees were headed back to another extra innings matchup. Griffin started the tenth at second and got to third right away after Pina advanced him on a sac bunt. Andrews then threw a wild pitch with Kiki Menendez batting that allowed Griffin to score, giving Burlington a 4-3 lead.

Wisconsin ties game, but can't walk it off

The Timber Rattlers started with Zach Clark at second in their tenth inning, and he also advanced to third on a sac bunt from Gabriel Garcia. Payton Henry then hit a hard grounder to short, which was enough to get Clark into score, tying the game at 4-4. Wisconsin then got back to back singles from Jay Feliciano and Darren Seferina, but Silva flew out to end the inning.

Harrison gives Wisconsin the win

Tristen Lutz led the bottom of the eleventh off with a big hit, sending his 28th double of the season to right, but it wasn't enough to score Silva, as the Timber Rattlers did still have runners on second and third with no outs. KJ Harrison then hit a fly ball to left, that Martinez failed to catch, with scored Silva to give the Timber Rattlers a 5-4 win.

Bees miss scoring chance in the eleventh

That fly ball from Harrison could have only been the tying run had the Bees taken advantage of the scoring chance Andrews gave them in the top of the eleventh. The Bees got the bases loaded with only one out after Rubalcaba started the inning at second, and Rivas and Martinez were both hit by pitches. Andrews came back and struck out Williams on a full count and got Griffin to ground out to second to end the inning with no damage done.

Double plays kill possible big innings

Along with the double play Burlington had in the third, the Bees had two more double plays that hurt them on offense. Pina led the fourth off with a single, but Millard grounded into a double play to erase the leadoff hit from Pina. Menendez ended up getting a single in the next at bat after the double play. In the seventh, Rubalcaba led the inning off with a double, and Rivas advanced him to third on a single, putting runners at the corners with one out. Martinez then drew a walk to load the bases, and Wisconsin quickly made a pitching change. Williams then sent a ball to center for a fly out and Rubalcaba headed home to try to make it a sac fly, but Clark threw Rubalcaba out at home to end the inning.

Rivas continues hot streak

It was the seventh straight game where Bees infielder Leonardo Rivas recorded at least one hit, and of those seven games, he has finished with two or more in five of them. Rivas recorded his third straight multi hit game after going 3-5 at the plate and driving in his sixth run during his hitting streak. Rivas has raised his average from .219 to .237, and his on base percentage up to .360.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will conclude their series with the Timber Rattlers tomorrow night 7:05 pm, before heading south to play the Kane County Cougars. Burlington does not yet have an expected starter, but Wisconsin is expected to go with Wilfred Salaman. Salaman hasn't pitched in Low A since June 10th, as he has spent the last month and a half with the Helena Brewers. Salaman made eight starts for Helena, where he posted a 4-1 record, a 2.66 ERA, and struck out 31 in 44 innings pitched.
