Bees Fall Behind Early and Can't Recover in Loss to Kane County

Geneva, Ill. - After a long bus ride to Geneva Illinois for the Burlington Bees (14-31,44-70), who started the fourth game of their six game road trip against the Kane County Cougars (23-24,58-58). Kane County managed to get out to a solid lead early on and the Bees couldn't find a way to get back in the game, as Kane County took the series opener 4-2. Mack Lemieux (3-9) got his first win since June 13th, after going five innings, allowing just one run on six hits, five walks, and threw three strikeouts. Max Herrmann (2-7) suffered his seventh loss after allowing two runs in the first inning, and only managed to record one out before having to exit the game with an injury.

Holmes drives in a pair in the first

Yoel Yanqui was the first baserunner for Kane County after Herrmann hit him with a pitch. Yan Sanchez then hit a line drive at Herrmann then ended up hitting him, allowing Sanchez to reach first for a single. Herrmann would exit the game after that incident and Zack Kelly would be brought into the game. Both Yanqui and Sanchez would steal a base to get runners to second and third, and Jancarlos Cintron would draw a two out walk to load the bases. Tra Holmes then hit a single to left that allowed Yanqui and Sanchez to score, giving Kane County a 2-0 lead.

Grotjohn puts Bees in big hole in third

Sanchez got on base again in the bottom of the third after drawing a one out walk, and advanced to second after stealing his second base of the game and his tenth of the season. Ryan Grotjohn then lined a double to right for his 18th of the season, which allowed Sanchez to score, giving Kane County a 3-0 lead.

Bees get on the board in the fourth

Spencer Griffin gave Burlington their third hit of the ball game with a one out single to right and got to second after Tim Millard drew a walk. After Kiki Menendez struck out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch to get runners to second and third, and Lemieux then threw another wild pitch to allow Griffin to score, making the score 3-1.

Yanqui puts Cougars back up by three

Eudy Ramos led the sixth inning off with his 14th double to give the Cougars a runner in scoring position. Luis Lara drew a full count walk to put runners on first and second, and Yanqui would drive in the fourth run for the Cougars on a single to left, giving him his 52nd RBI of the season.

Bees stay in it with run in seventh

Kane County was having a really solid game defensively, until Ramos had a bad throw to first then went past Yanqui and allowed Harrison Wenson to advance to second. Burlington then got the bases loaded on back to back walks from Leonardo Rivas and Orlando Martinez. Kevin Williams Jr then hit a grounder to short and Kane County got Martinez out at second, but Williams Jr managed to reach first, which allowed Wenson to score, making the score 4-2. Griffin would then load the bases again on a walk, but Millard couldn't deliver a possible game tying hit, as he grounded out to third to end the inning. Burlington would then go six up six down in the final two innings, giving Kane County a 4-2 win.

Bees bullpen comes up big

A relief pitcher never expects to have to come in the first inning of a game, but Kelly was forced to come in after the injury to Herrmann. Although Kelly started rough, he still went two and two thirds, allowed one run on two hits and two walks. Austin Krzeminski did give up a run on five hits and a walk in two and a third innings of work and threw one strikeout. The game after the crazy walk off, James Ziemba took the mound again and threw one and two thirds innings and struck out two. Andrew Wantz made his first appearance since August 1st, after spending time on the DL, but didn't look rusty at all. Wantz threw an inning, allowed just a walk, and threw a pair of strikeouts. These four players really stepped up for Burlington and did what was expected of them, keeping the Bees in the game.

Stout shuts down comeback

Kyler Stout took over after Burlington got the bases loaded for the second time in the seventh inning and got the big third out with Millard at the plate. Stout went on to pitch the final two innings, not allowing on baserunner, and striking out three to earn his third save of the season.

Double plays kill Bees again

Once again, the Bees got runners on base, but the double play killed what could have been big innings. Rivas led the game off with a single to center, but Williams Jr grounded into a double play, ending the inning. Burlington got Wenson on first after he got hit by a pitch to start the third, but Rivas grounded into a double play to give Burlington two outs with no runners on. The biggest blow came in the fifth, when Burlington had the bases loaded with one out, and Williams Jr grounded into a five-three double play to end the inning.

Looking Ahead

The Bees have lost four in a row now and will look to end their losing ways tomorrow afternoon, as they battle Kane County again at 1pm. Burlington is expected to start Michael Santos, who has been big for the Bees. Santos is 3-1 in four starts and 14 total appearances and has posted a solid 3.24 ERA. The Cougars are expected to start Cole Bartlett, who is 3-2 with a 3.98 ERA in three starts and 21 total appearances. Bartlett's last start came against Burlington, where he allowed just two runs in seven innings, but only got one run from his offense, as he suffered the loss.
