The Portland Winterhawks (34-15-0-3) got goals from five different players Saturday in a 5-2 win in Seattle against the Thunderbirds (18-23-4-5). The Winterhawks remain first in the Western Conference with 71 points.

Seattle struck first midway through the first period when Travis Toomey scored a power play goal 9:16 into the game to make it 1-0, but Portland's Brad Ross evened the game at the 15:18 mark with his 17th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 going into the second period.

Ryan Johansen then gave the Winterhawks a 2-1 lead 2:49 into the second period, the lone goal of the period. Johansen's goal was his 24th of the season, already just one shy of last season's total.

The Winterhawks extended their lead 7:16 into the third period when Ty Rattie scored his 22nd goal of the season to make it 3-1. Portland struck again at the 10:58 mark when Craig Cunningham beat Seattle netminder Calvin Pickard to give the Winterhawks a 4-1 lead. Cunningham now has seven goals in four games against Seattle since coming over in a trade from Vancouver.

Seattle cut the lead to 4-2 at the 17:58 mark of the third period when Marcel Noebels scored a power play goal to cut Portland's lead to two. Late in the game with Pickard on the bench for an extra attacker, Portland's William Wrenn took advantage with an empty net goal to give the Winterhawks a 5-2 lead that would stand as the final.

Mac Carruth earned the win in net, stopping 43 of the 45 Seattle shots he faced. Pickard stopped 37 of the 41 shots Portland fired at him.

The Winterhawks are off until Friday, when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings at the Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m., followed by the team's annual Salute to the Portland Buckaroos the following night, Saturday, Feb. 5 at the Coliseum against the Tri-City Americans at 7 p.m.
