Spokane Loses a Wild 5-4 Decision to Tri-City

Tri-City's Mason Wilgosh capped off a wild 3:40 span late in the third period and scored the game winning goal on Saturday night handing the Americans a 5-4 win in the Spokane Arena. Spokane's loss came despite a Steven Kuhn hat-trick and a 3-5 effort on the power play.

The Americans Connor Rankin initally gave Tri-City a 4-2 lead at 15:43 of the third but the Chiefs fought back with two goals and evened it up. The first came from by Tyler Johnson at 16:05 as kept his point scoring streak alive at 17 games with his league leading 38th goal of the year. Jared Cowen sent Johnson in on a breakaway and the 20-year-old scored for the second straight game.

Kuhn then finished his hat trick with a power play goal at 18:51, tying the game up at 4-4 and leaving the sold out crowd of 10,474 with thoughts of extra time. Wilgosh put that to rest as he finished off a back door feed from Patrick Holland with just 37-seconds remaining. The goal gave the Americans their first win in Spokane this season.

The game began with a scoreless first period and the Americans jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first 6:20 of the second. Kuhn tallied his first two of the game, both on the power play, at 7:35 when he tucked a Kenton Miller pass between the pads of Drew Owsley in the Americans' net. He then tipped in a Jared Cowen wrist shot with just 40-seconds remaining in the second.

Adam Hughesman scored the first of three American goals at 7:03 of the third, setting up the final five minutes.

The Chiefs held the Americans, the number one team in the WHL on the power play, to an 0-5 night.

After a five day rest, the two teams will meet again on Friday night in Tri-City for the Chiefs next game. Mike Boyle will go on the air at 6:30 with Comcast Hockey Tonight on 1510 KGA.
