Vancouver Giants Lose In Kelowna 7-3

The Vancouver Giants 5 game winning streak came to an end in Kelowna Saturday night as they fell to the Rockets 7-3. Kelowna scored 5 goals in the third period en route to their 6th straight victory. With the win the Rockets move into first place in the B.C. division, one point up on the Giants.

Having not played each other since November 5, 2010, miuch of the first period was spent trying to figure out what to expect. Both teams had power play opportunities, but none resulted in a goal. The first period finished scorelss with Vancouver outshooting Kelowna 7-6.

The Rockets came out firing in the second period getting on the board 6:13 into the frame. 1:52 later they would make it a 2-0 game. At one point they had outshot the Giants 15-2 in the frame. The top line for Vancouver would have a response as Brendan Rowinski tipped home a nice feed from Spencer Bennett for his 12th of the seaosn to get the Giants within one. However, they were accessed two penalites at the same time wtih just :27 seconds left in the period to give the Rockets a two minute 5-3. Giants managed to get out the period down just 2-1.

With the benefit of fresh ice, it only took the Rockets 31 seconds to convert on the 5-3, making it a 3-1 game. Kelowna would add another before Rowinski potted his second of the night and 13th of the year to get Vancouver back within two goals. Kelowna took advantage of the Giants costly turnovers in their own zone all night as Shane McColgan scored to extend the lead to 5-2. Greg Lamoureux countered with his 4th of the season, but that is as close as Vancouver would come. The Rockets added two more to make it a 7-3 final. Mark Segal suffered his first loss since December 30th, making 28 saves on the night.

The Giants continue their 5 game road trip in Medicine Hat on Tuesday night. Game time is 6:00pm PST. The pregame show begins at 5:30pm PST on AM 650.
