Winterhawks Game Day Preview: Portland at Everett - Game #7

Portland (3-2-0-1) ends its road swing on Saturday night in Everett against the Silvertips (3-2-0-0). It will be the team's sixth road game out of seven to start the year. After a pair of wins in British Columbia, the Western Conference leading scorers are looking to remain hot in Washington.

PREVIOUS GAME - Winterhawks 5 at Blazers 3: The Winterhawks battled in the third and won a game that was dictated by special teams play.

The power play could not be stopped on Friday night. Portland was able to strike twice on a major penalty to take the early road lead. In his first game action of the season, forward Ryan Hughes ripped in his first goal of the season from Brendan De Jong and Seth Jarvis. The Winterhawks would put in their second of the frame on the power play 22 seconds later thanks to Joachim Blichfeld. That goal put the Danish forward at the top of the WHL leaderboard with his fourth power play goal of the year. The Blazers responded with a power play goal of their own in the final two minutes of the frame to cut the lead in half heading into our first intermission break.

The second period tipped the Blazers way. They out-shot the Hawks 12 to 3 and scored twice. Just as a power play expired, Connor Zary scored his first of the season to tie the game at the midway point of the second. With seven seconds to play in the period, Zane Franklin scored blocker side on Farkas during a 5-on-3 power play to give Kamloops its first lead of the night. That was Franklin's second goal of the game.

Coming back from the second period intermission, Joachim Blichfeld earned himself a 110-foot shorthanded, breakaway and he capitalized on nice backhanded deke in tight. A few moments later, Blichfeld found Jake Gricius for a one-time goal in the slot one second after the penalty expired to regain a lead for Portland.

Shane Farkas stood strong in the third period, blocking all ten shots that came his way and Mason Mannek sealed the victory with an empty net goal.

TODAY'S OPPONENT:

Much like the Winterhawks, the Silvertips enter tonight's game riding a three game winning streak of their own. On Friday night, they needed overtime to beat Seattle in their Pink in the Rink Night. Connor Dewar scored in his fourth straight game to provide the 2-1 game winner

Despite the close score, Everett throttled Seattle in every sense of the word. They out-shot the Thunderbirds 41 to 17 and won the special teams battle. At one point, the Thunderbirds only had seven registered shots on goal through 50 minutes of play. Forward Bryce Kindopp scored the first of the night midway through the third period and he assisted Dewar on the game winner 17 seconds into overtime. Kindopp and Dewar combined for 15 of the team's 41 shots Friday night inside Angel of the Winds Arena.

The difference between Portland and Everett is that Everett has had the luxury of playing more home games to this point. Riley Sutter is riding a four game point streak into Saturday night's contest, featuring a three-point performance in Kennewick seven days ago.

Everett is one of the best defenses in the league and they are tied for second with fewest goals allowed on the year. Goaltender Dustin Wolf has been between the pipes for all five of the 'Tips games this season, and is sixth in the league with a 1.61 goals against average.

In the last head-to-head meeting two weeks ago, Everett beat Portland 3-1. Jaydon Dureau netted his first WHL goal in the game, but the Silvertips cruised to their first win of the season. The lineup will look different for the Hawks this time around with Cody Glass and Ryan Hughes both taking the ice.
