Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Moose Jaw, SK. - The Brandon Wheat Kings season opening win streak has come to an end.
The Wheat Kings opened up a 2-game Saskatchewan road trip Friday night by dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to the Warriors in Moose Jaw.
Josh Brook's goal at the sixteen second mark of overtime was the difference as the Wheat Kings lost for the first time this season, after opening the 2018-19 campaign with three straight victories
Brook added a pair of assists for the Warriors, who lost back to back games to Brandon to kick off the regular season.
Brandon captain Stelio Mattheos had both goals for the Wheat Kings, including the equalizer midway through the third period, setting the stage of overtime.
"Stelio was excellent tonight," Wheat Kings coach David Anning said following the game. "He was competitive and hard to play against. He finished some checks, he had the puck on his stick a lot and those goals he scored were goal-scorer's goals."
Unfortunately Mattheos' play wasn't enough as the Wheat Kings were outshot 30-22, including 11-5 in the third.
"The start of the game...it was sloppy and choppy...and I don't think we ever got any traction," Anning added.
Brandon went 1 for 3 with the man advantage while killing off three of four Moose Jaw powerplays.
The Wheat Kings, who are now 3-0-1-0 on the season, will be looking to get back on track Saturday night when they take on the Pats in Regina. The Pats edged Swift Current 6-5 Friday night for their first win of the season.
Following Saturday's game Brandon will return home for a 5-game homestand, beginning with back to back games next weekend against the Warriors and Broncos.
Tickets to both games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at www.keystonecentre.com
Friday is "Drive Away Hunger Night", presented by Heritage Co-op.
