Spokane Chiefs News Release

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs' comeback effort fell just short Friday night as they suffered a shootout loss to the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers, 3-2.

Medicine Hat took a 1-0 lead at 3:19 of the first period just 20 seconds after Jeff Faith was sent to the penalty box for charging. Spokane's Ethan McIndoe tied things up with his first goal of the season at 17:12, taking advantage of a loose puck the deflected off Tigers' goaltender Mads Sogaard.

Spokane put 10 shots on goal during the second period and it appeared Ty Smith had put the Chiefs on top five minutes in, but the goal was waved off due to incidental contact. Minutes later, Medicine Hat took the lead at 2-1 with Jake McGrew sitting in the penalty box due to a tripping call, giving the Tigers their second power play goal of the night.

The two sides exchanged blows throughout the third period, but neither team was able to find the twine until Riley Woods connected for his fifth goal, an empty netter, in as many games with just over a minute remaining in regulation, forcing overtime.

After a scoreless five minute overtime period that featured the Chiefs surviving a penalty kill the two teams entered a shootout. Woods, Eli Zummack and Jake McGrew's shot attempts were turned away, and after failed attempts by James Hamblin and Bryan Lockner, Josh Williams connected for Medicine Hat, sending the Tigers to a 3-2 victory.

The Chiefs outshot the Tigers 41-29 on the night, but finished the evening 0-4 on the power play while Medicine Hat took advantage of their opportunities, going 2-3. Bailey Brkin saved 27 or 29 shots in net for the Chiefs, while Mads Sogaard was 39-41 for the Tigers.
