Luding Shuts the Dorrin Calgary

Saskatoon Blades News Release

Calgary, Alta. -- Dorrin Luding made 42 saves in his first start of the season leading the Blades to a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Hitmen Friday night at the Scoitabank Saddledome. The win improves the Blades' record to 5-2-0-0 on the season, with one more stop on the road trip in Lethbridge on Saturday.

Fresh off a 3-point outing on Wednesday night, Kirby Dach opened the scoring midway through the first period for the visiting Blades. Eric Florchuk entered the Calgary zone and dropped a pass off for Aidan De La Gorgendiere who then joined the rush down the left wing. The rookie defenseman then whipped a pass tight in front of the Hitmen cage for Kirby Dach to finish off. Dach's 5th of the season extended his point streak to three games (2G, 4a), Florchuk's assist also extended his streak to three games (3G, 1A), while De La Gorgendiere's assist counted for his first Western Hockey League point. Neither team was assessed a penalty and each side got nine shots on goal as the Blades took the 1-0 lead into the first break.

Saskatoon's third line went to work in the second period, scoring twice and increasing the Blades' lead to 3-0. First Riley McKay centered a pass to Logan Christensen who found Michael Farren on the back door. Almost exactly 10 minutes later, Logan Christensen banged in a loose puck for his first goal of the season; Michael Farren and Dawson Davidson added the assists. Davidson's assist was the 100th of his WHL career, also extending his personal point streak to 7 points in his last 4 outings.

Despite the lack of penalties in the first half of the game, things ramped up as the Hitmen's frustration increased following Saskatoon's third goal. The Blades had two power plays in the second period and another four in the final frame. The power play unit was unsuccessful going 0/6 on the night but it didn't matter because the penalty killers were a perfect 2/2.

19-year-old Dorrin Luding was nothing short of stellar in his season debut, making several key saves in the third period to preserve his shutout. The veteran netminder earned the second shutout of his career thanks to a 42-save performance and was named the 1st star of the game. Logan Christensen's 2-point night was good enough for 2nd star, and Kirby Dach completed the sweep as the game's 3rd star with 1 goal.

Following the game the Blades boarded the bus to head south to Lethbridge for their fourth and final stop on the road trip. The Hurricanes also played on Friday night, falling 5-1 at home to the Prince Albert Raiders.
