RHP Cameron Bayne (5-4, 4.10) vs. LHP Nick Haughian (3-3, 4.14)

Like an E6: Last night the Dash committed a season-high six errors and fell behind quickly again, losing to the Keys 8-3 at BB&T Ballpark. Frederick scored four runs - only one earned - in the first three innings as Winston-Salem could not stop hurting itself defensively. Mike Blanke alone committed three throwing errors on stolen base attempts, Tyler Saladino booted a ground ball for his first error of the season, Ryan Buch missed an easy catch on a fielder's choice groundout, and Jose Martinez' ill-advised dive on a line drive led to the sixth and final error of the night. The Keys were no defensive masters themselves, committing four errors on the night to give the game a combined total of ten defensive miscues. The Dash lost for the sixth time in seven games and are just 2-7 against the Keys in 2011.

Ominous Beginnings: Slow starts continued to hurt Winston-Salem last night, as the Keys built another lead early against the Dash. Last night the Keys scored four times in the first three innings and on Monday, Frederick took a 5-1 lead by the third inning. Over the Dash's six losses since last Wednesday, they have been outscored in the first three innings by a 26-3 margin.

Ty High: Tyler Saladino bounced back from an 0 for 5 night on Monday to go 2 for 4 with two RBI in last night's loss. After missing the first month of the season with a broken hand, Saladino is starting take off offensively. He has a base hit in seven of his last nine games and a multi-hit game in five of the last eight contests he has played in. Since June 5, Saladino is batting .324 (12 for 37) with four doubles, one homer, seven RBI, and three runs scored. He has raised his batting average 39 points to .224 during this period.

Under Water: With their 36th loss of the season last night, the Dash are guaranteed to finish below .500 in the first half of 2011. Winston-Salem had not finished below .500 in a half since the first half of the 2008 season when the team was still the Warthogs. That year, the 'Hogs were 29-40 in the first half, but rebounded to go 42-28 in the second half and clinch a playoff berth.

Austin City Limits: Austin Yount continued his strong stretch of offensive play Sunday night, going 1 for 4, reaching on an error and scoring twice. He has now picked up a hit in six of his last seven games, with three of those games being multi-hit efforts. He is batting .391 (9 for 23) since May 31 to raise his season batting average from .176 to .218, a jump of 42 points.

Sierra Mist: Luis Sierra continues to hit well in his return to the Carolina League. He went 1 for 4 with a double Monday night and since returning from a three-game stint with AA Birmingham he is 5 for 11 at the plate with two doubles, one RBI, and two runs scored while playing a steady second and third base. His two two-hit games this weekend were the Colombian's first since May 15.

Tour de Bour: Dash catcher Jason Bour cleared the goose egg from the home run column on his stat line Sunday night, blasting a parabolic homer on a hanging Jake Odorizzi curveball in the third inning to make it a 7-0 Winston lead. With Bour's homer, every current Dash position player except Mike Blanke has now gone deep in 2011. It was the first home run for Bour since August 25, 2010 at Lynchburg, a span of 124 homerless at bats.

BallWINger: Mark down a "W" for the Dash when J.R. Ballinger comes into a game for Winston-Salem. The Mississippian got the win Sunday for the Dash to improve to 4-0 in the Carolina League. In all four of Ballinger's appearances for Winston, he has picked up the victory.

Today's Opposing Starter: LHP Nick Haughian (3-3, 4.14) makes his ninth start and 14th appearance of the season. He has appeared in two games against the Dash this season, starting one and relieving in another. He is 0-1 with an ERA of 7.00 (7 ER, 7 IP) against Winston-Salem. He is coming off back-to-back quality starts, including his best start of the season on Friday that saw him surrender just three hits over seven shutout innings against the Hillcats in a win. The performance earned him the Carolina League's "Player of the Week" award for the week. Haughian spent most of last season as a reliever for low-A Delmarva (30 appearances) before transitioning to a starter late in the year (5 starts). He went 6-4 with a 3.97 ERA for the Shorebirds, striking out 90 batters in 93 innings. He spent most of his 2009 season with short-season Aberdeen (with two apperances for Delmarva) and played for the Iron Birds in 2008, his first professional season. Haughian was drafted by Baltimore in the ninth round in 2008 out of the University of Washington. The Marysville, WA native was 12-13 with the Huskies and spent his last two seasons there as a starting pitcher. As a junior, Haughian went 6-5 with a 3.76 ERA and led UW in complete games (3), shutouts (1), and strikeouts (107, second in the Pac-10). He was first-team All-State as a senior at Marysville-Pilchuck HS, going 10-0 with a 0.68 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 61.2 innings. He led his team to the state quarterfinals that season. Overall, he was 20-1 as a pitcher in high school. Haughian throws a low-90s fastball, a slider, and a changeup.
