Pelicans Can Clinch Playoff Spot this Weekend

June 15, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The race for the playoffs is coming to its thrilling conclusion this weekend at BB&T Coastal Field! The Myrtle Beach Pelicans have an opportunity to clinch the first-half Southern Division title and automatic postseason berth in front of their home fans as they host the Northern Division champion Frederick Keys in what could be a Mills Cup Championship series preview.

With their magic number to clinch down to three, the Pelicans host the Keys for the final four games of the 2011 first half from Thursday through Sunday. The first three games will start at 7:05 p.m. and first pitch for Sunday's first-half finale is slated for 6:05 p.m. The Keys locked up the first-half crown in the Northern Division, but the Pelicans still have a lot of work to do to clinch the Southern Division title.

With a loss this afternoon at Potomac, the Pelicans' magic number to clinch a postseason berth stayed at three. The Kinston Indians, whose 23-inning victory over Myrtle Beach on Sunday was the longest game in Carolina League history, have five games remaining and sit two games back in the standings. Any combination of three Pelicans victories or K-Tribe losses will hand the Birds their first playoff spot since 2008.

For Thursday night's opener the Pelicans will honor those who really come through in the clutch with Emergency Services Night. We'll give a big thanks to our police, fire and EMT workers who keep us safe. It's also a Thirsty Thursday, the terrific weekly promotion at BB&T Coastal Field! Drink specials include one dollar domestic draft beers from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. courtesy of Better Brands, Celebrations Nightlife and the Weekly Surge.

The second game of this set against Frederick features another great Pelicans giveaway! Get to BB&T Coastal Field early on Friday because the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Pelicans sunglasses case!

On Saturday night, the Pelicans will serve those who serve us, as we honor our men and women in uniform with Military Appreciation Night! Saturday's game will also feature an appearance from the Sweet Right Brothers. Come out and enjoy Sketchy and Gus in their wacky traveling mascot act!

Celebrate Father's Day at BB&T Coastal Field as the Pelicans salute all dads at the ballpark! Like every Sunday at BB&T Coastal Field, it's Family Sunday. All fans will be allowed to have a pregame catch on the field right after the gates open at 5 PM. And be sure to stay after the final out as the Pelicans will cap off the homestand and the first half of the season with a spectacular fireworks extravaganza presented by McDonald's!

After Sunday's game, many leagues will have their All-Star break and while some players will get some well-deserved rest, four Pelicans have earned a trip to Modesto, California for Tuesday's California-Carolina League All-Star Game at John Thurman Field. Joe Wieland and Robbie Ross are two of the nine pitchers on the Carolina League squad, Ryan Strausborger will start in the outfield and catcher Zach Zaneski was named to the team as a reserve. Third baseman Mike Olt was voted onto the team as well, but will not play due to a broken collarbone.

The Pelicans will open up the season's second half on Thursday, June 23 with the first of a four-game series against the Potomac Nationals. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field Box office, the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, or by calling (843)918-6000 or (877)918-TIXX.
