Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JUNE 15, 2011) - Behind a career-high four-hit night for Jared Mitchell and Andy Wilkins' tenth home run of the season, Winston-Salem dominated and took home a 9-1 win on Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Ian Gac also added three RBI and the Dash totaled a season-high 15 hits in the first half home finale.
Winston (30-36) cracked the scoreboard in the third inning against Keys starter Nick Haughian. Tyler Saladino walked to start the frame and moved to second when Mitchell singled. During Jose Martinez's at-bat, Winston executed a double steal to put runners in scoring position. Martinez struck out, but Gac and Wilkins followed with two straight run-scoring singles to put the Dash up by two.
The two-run third was only the tip of the iceberg for the Dash offensively on Wednesday. After Frederick (41-25) scored a run in the top of the fifth, Winston came back in the bottom and batted around. The first four batters reached starting with a single by Saladino. Mitchell had an infield single on a swinging bunt, and then Martinez reached on an actual bunt. With the bases loaded, Gac walked to force in a run. Wilkins then popped out before Jake Oester hit a two-run single to center field. Winston wasn't finished. Two batters later, Jason Bour drove in Gac with a single, capping the four-run frame.
In the next inning, the fireworks continued. Mitchell notched his fourth hit of the game with one out. The effort was Mitchell's first four-hit game of his career. He was able to advance to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Gac single. Wilkins followed and lined a home run over the short fence in right field to put the Dash up 9-1.
Tempers flared in the ninth. After Gac was hit by a pitch with two outs in the eighth inning, Winston reliever Leroy Hunt threw behind Joe Oliveira with two outs in the ninth. That prompted the umpiring crew to warn the benches. Julio Vinas contested the warning, starting a shouting match between Vinas and Frederick manager Orlando Gomez. Both managers were ejected from the game, and Oliveira grounded out to Saladino to end the game shortly after the words were exchanged.
Cameron Bayne had a stellar outing and got the win after a quality start. He threw eight innings and gave up one run on five hits. Haughian was hit with the loss after allowing a season-high 11 hits and six runs (all earned).
Winston-Salem closes out the first half of the season on the road in Wilmington starting on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Joe Serafin (0-5, 5.22) throws against LHP Noel Arguelles (2-2, 2.74) in the series opener.
