THE HILLCATS: Tuesday, the Hillcats split a double-header with the Wilmington Blue Rocks, losing game one 3-1, and winning game two 7-3...Lynchburg was nearly shutout in game one until Joe Leonard delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh...Then in game two, the 'Cats pitching limited the Blue Rocks to just one hit but walked nine...Wilmington brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the final frame of game two, but Ryan Buchter induced two fly-outs to end the game and record his fourth save of the season...The Hillcats sit in third place in the Carolina League Northern Division, 12.0 games back of the first place Frederick Keys...
VS. WILMINGTON: The Hillcats are 6-3 against the Blue Rocks this season...Lynchburg has dominated the season series statistically, batting .298 as a team against Wilmington, while the pitching boasts a 2.93 ERA through the nine prior meetings...The Blue Rocks on the other hand are hitting .229, with a 5.30 ERA vs the Hillcats...Last season, Lynchburg lost the season series to Wilmington 8-12...Myrtle Beach (2010 Braves Advance-A affiliate) however, won 11 of their 20 match-ups with the Blue Rocks a season ago...
HAD TO HAPPEN SOME TIME: Heading into yesterday's double header the Hillcats were 7-0 in seven-inning contests this season, and 6-0 in double-headers...The seventh seven-inning game was the result of making up a suspended game prior to a regularly scheduled game back on April 27 against Wilmington in Lynchburg...The Hillcats swept their first double-header April 23 in Frederick (3-0, 2-1), and then swept back-to-back twin-bills in Potomac May 28-29...
WILD NIGHT: LHP Dimasther Delgado, RHP David Hale, RHP Jeremy Haynes, and LHP Ryan Buchter, combined to limit the Blue Rocks to just one hit over seven innings in game two last night...However, they also combined to walk nine...Delgado (4), Hale (1), Haynes (3), and Buchter (1)...The walks made things interesting in seventh...Haynes entered with a six run lead...He walked three while also having an error committed behind him and fail to record an out...Buchter relieved Haynes with the bases loaded...A sac-fly made 7-3, before Buchter reloaded the bases with a walk, bringing the tying run to the plate...The next two flew out and Buchter got the save...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Seven members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
ALL-STAR REVISION: OF Adam Milligan has been named to the Carolina League All-Star team to replace injured teammate Todd Cunningham as a reserve outfielder...Milligan, who had a rather slow start to the season, hitting just .224 and driving in just 10 runs through his first 23 games before hitting the DL with a hamstring injury May 10...Since returning May 17, he has hit .314 through 28 games, raising his batting average 49 points to .273...He's also driven in 24 runs in that span, giving him a team-high 34 on the season...Five home runs on either side of the injury have him at 10 on the season, tied for third in the league...Plate discipline may be partly responsible for the offensive surge, as Milligan has drawn 12 walks post-injury, after taking just two free passes prior...
JOE KNOWS EXTRA BASES: INF Joe Leonard entered the Wilmington series in a 2-for-24 slump...Through three games this series, he is 5-for-9 with a home run and four doubles, driving in and scoring three runs each...Leonard had missed a week's worth of games May 28-June 5 with a sore elbow...In his first seven games back before Monday night, he was just 4-for 29 with 11 strikeouts since returning...Leonard had only struck out 25 times in his previous 38 games prior to that seven game stretch...
TOUGH BREAK: C Braeden Schlehuber hit the disabled list again last Friday...While attempting to put down a sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning Thursday night, his right index finger was struck by the pitch...The ball split open the tip of his finger so bad that he would have to exit the game and require stitches...C Shawn McGill ran in from the bullpen to enter the at-bat with a 1-2 count, runners at first and second and the score tied 1-1...He would ground into a 6-4-3 double play, adding insult to injury as they say...
PLAYER OF THE MONTH: INF Joey Terdoslavich was honored as the Carolina League Player of the Month for May as voted by the league's managers...Terdoslavich hit .304 (31-for-102) with four home runs and 20 RBI in 27 games last month...He is second in the league in home runs with 11 on the season...He also racked up 11 doubles in May, and currently has 18 total, tying him for second in the league as well...His average went from .243 to .279 during the month...The honor was the first weekly or monthly award of his career...So far in June, he is hitting just .216 with no home runs, and two RBI in 14 games...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Tim Melville was selected by the Royals in the fourth round of the 2008 draft out of Holt High School (MO)...Entering the 2011 season, he was rated as the 14th best prospect in Kansas City's system by Baseball America...Second season in the Carolina League...Last year led Wilmington in starts (22) and innings pitched (112.1), and tied for third in strikeouts (90)...Faced Lynchburg twice this season, on April 25 and May 2...On April 25, earned the win after giving up one run on five hits in seven innings pitched...Took the loss on May 2, giving up seven runs, six earned, on 11 hits in four innings...Currently 6-6 with a 4.67 ERA in 12 starts this season...
