Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA - Juston Bloxom smashed a leadoff solo home run down the right-field line to claim a Wednesday daytime finale for the Potomac Nationals over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and send the Nats to a 5-4 victory in the last game of three at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium. The win dropped the Pelicans' Southern Division lead to two games over the Kinston Indians pending like Tribe's finale outcome with Salem Wednesday night in Kinston.
In their second extra-innings game of the road trip, following Sunday's record-breaking 23-inning loss to the Indians at Grainger Stadium, the Pelicans had the upper hand first in their daytime finale. Myrtle Beach got a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the fifth inning from All-Star center fielder Ryan Strausborger to take a 2-0 lead in support of fellow All-Star pitcher Robbie Ross. The Nationals responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame, though, breaking a 2-2 tie on a two-run Destin Hood homer to take a 4-2.
Myrtle Beach pulled even with two runs in the seventh when Jared Bolden and Leury Garcia pounded home plate against originally scheduled starter Danny Rosenbaum. Big league rehabber Chad Gaudin pitched a scoreless first for Potomac before giving way to Rosenbaum who allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits over five and two-thirds. He departed with two gone in the seventh.
With an offense that has struggled to find a consistent rhythm since the injury to third baseman and cleanup hitter Mike Olt last week against Winston-Salem, the Pelicans couldn't get over the hump against the Nationals' staff. Five Potomac pitchers combined to strand nine Myrtle Beach runners on the basepaths. Ross exited after five innings, departing after Potomac's four-run frame, striking out four and walking one while allowing all of Potomac's runs as earned ones in the fifth. Ross surrendered eight hits and took the no-decision.
The game went scoreless from the Pelicans' half of the seventh until the tenth when Bloxom teed off on a full-count offering from Pelicans reliever Trevor Hurley. The homer, Bloxom's fifth of the season, gave the win to reliever Joe Testa (4-0) and made a loser out of Hurley (0-3).
With the loss, the Pelicans finish their final first-half road trip at 2-4 and open up a do-or-die four-game homestand with the Northern Division champion Frederick Keys arriving at BB&T Coastal Field Thursday. The Pelicans' magic number to clinch the Southern Division remains at three after the Wednesday loss. The Indians can close to within a game and a half of the Pelicans with a Wednesday night win over the Salem Red Sox.
