CarL1 Frederick Keys

Testy Finale Goes to Dash

June 15, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

A rare lopsided defeat turned into a heated argument with two outs in the ninth inning in a Keys 9-1 loss in the series finale in Winston-Salem on Wednesday night. The loss was the first time the Keys dropped a game by more than three runs in a month.

With two down and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth inning Dash pitcher Leroy Hunt through behind Keys catcher Joe Oliviera. Both teams were warned afterwards and as managers Orlando Gomez and Julio Vinas went out to argue against it they began a shouting match with each other. Both managers were ejected from the game.

Unfortunately for Frederick that was the height of the drama.

In a 2-1 game in the fifth inning, Winston-Salem began the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases. After a walk to 1B Ian Gac to bring home a run, the Dash opened up the big inning, plating four runs on five hits to lead the Keys 6-1.

An inning later with a run home Dash DH Andy Wilkins hit his second home run of the series, a two-run line drive shot to right field to put Winston-Salem up 9-1.

The Keys could only muster five hits on the night. LF Kipp Schutz had the lone multi-hit night going 2-for-4.

The Keys now travel to Myrtle Beach for a four-game series to close the first half. The Pelicans have a magic number of three to clinch the South as they try to hold off Kinston. Bobby Bundy will make the start Thursday night with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Airtime is 6:45 p.m. on 1450-AM The Source.

Frederick will return home for The Principal Financial Dreams Tour taking on Winston-Salem to open the second half Thursday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Former Orioles great Chris Hoiles will be at the park signing autographs.
