CAVANERIO, TIMELY HITTING LEAD DASH

Thanks to a tremendous start from Jorgan Cavanerio and some timely offense, the Dash earned a 3-2 victory over the Frederick Keys on Monday night at BB&T Ballpark. Making his 10th start with Winston-Salem, Cavanerio continued his strong season. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five and allowing only one walk. It was the third straight quality start from Cavanerio. The Dash got on the board early against Frederick starter Brenan Hanifee in the bottom of the second. With one out, Zach Remillard reached on an infield single before stealing second base as Craig Dedelow struck out. Carlos Perez then blooped a single into center field, scoring Remillard to make it 1-0. JC Escarra tied the game with a solo shot to right in the seventh, but the Dash retook the lead in the bottom of the frame. Jameson Fisher singled to start frame, and, after a Remillard fielder's choice, Dedelow smacked a triple into the right-field corner to plate Remillard and give the Dash a 2-1 lead.

RECAPPING THE FIRST HALF

With a victory against Carolina on June 16, Winston-Salem clinched its third-best first-half winning percentage (.594) in the Dash era (2009-present). The Dash also ended the first half in second place in the Southern Division. By posting a .594 winning percentage, the 2019 team trailed only the 2012 club (.637) and 2010 team (.614) in first-half finishes.

THE FROST IS HEATING UP

After hitting a walk-off homer on Sunday, the first for the Dash since Yermin Mercedes hit one on August 19, 2018, against Wilmington, Tyler Frost is now tied for the team lead with 10 blasts. A 15th-round pick out of Gonzaga, Frost has now hit three homers in July. The 23-year-old is fresh off a strong month of June, during which he posted a .310/.372/.521 batting line with four long balls in 17 games played. Last season, Frost led Low-A Kannapolis with 18 home runs. Prior to his collegiate days at Gonzaga, Frost was named the Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014.

A HOOSIER ON THE HILL

Right-hander Jonathan Stiever will make his fourth start with the Dash on Tuesday. Stiever has made three consecutive quality starts to begin his Dash tenure. The former Indiana Hoosier limited Myrtle Beach to just one run on five hits across seven innings in his High-A debut on June 24. A fifth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, Stiever was promoted to Winston-Salem from Low-A Kannapolis at the start of the second half. In 17 starts between the two affiliates, the 22-year-old has struck out 98 batters in 93.0 innings pitched, Stiever was a star football player at Cedarburg High School. In 2014, he was named the state Football Player of the Year in Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

THE GIVE AND TAKE ON OFFENSE

Despite scoring just 38 runs over the last 12 games, the Dash are the only team in the Carolina League that is in the top three in batting average (3rd, .254), on-base percentage (1st, .337) and slugging percentage (2nd, .391). Meanwhile, the Dash are second in homers (63) and tied for fourth in runs scored (382). However, in the second half, the Dash have struggled with runners in scoring position, hitting at a .219 (39-for-178) clip.

NOT A LOT OF SEPARATION

Through the first 19 games of the second half, the Dash have not played a contest where the margin of victory or defeat was more than four runs. Here's the breakdown of the Dash's record in these games:

One-run games: 4-4

Two-run games: 2-4

Three-run games: 1-2

Four-run game: 1-1

ROBERT IS HEADING TO CHARLOTTE

Star prospect Luis Robert, who posted a staggering .453/.520/.912 batting line in 19 games played with the Dash to start the season, has been promoted to Triple-A Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham, the White Sox officially announced on Tuesday. Rated the fifth-best prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, Robert hit two homers on Opening Day against Frederick.
