NARVAEZ WALKS OFF IN FRONT OF 8,009
The second-largest crowd in BB&T Ballpark's six-year history watched Omar Narvaez propel the Dash past the Frederick Keys 6-5 thanks to a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 11th. Jake Peter singled with two down and the bases empty in that frame. Frederick righty Williams Louico issued consecutive walks to load the bases for Narvaez, who had struck out with a man at third and two outs in the ninth. Narvaez lashed a 1-2 changeup to right-center to send the crowd of 8,009 into a frenzy. The walk-off knock rewarded the great work of the Dash's bullpen. Andre Wheeler, Michael Ynoa and Brad Goldberg combined to work six innings and only give up one run.
WE MISSED YOU, WINSTON WALK-OFFS
Not only did Narvaez collect his first professional walk-off hit, but his heroics represented the Dash's first such accomplishment in more than a calendar year. Winston-Salem had not celebrated a walk-off victory since June 10, 2014, when Grant Buckner hit a solo shot in the eighth inning of a twin bill finale against Wilmington. This marks the Dash's seventh last at-bat win of 2015, with three coming in the last seven games.
WHAT A CROWD!
Narvaez and the Dash picked a great time to deliver Winston-Salem's first walk-off win in 13 months. The Dash welcomed 8,009 fans, the second-best crowd at BB&T Ballpark since the downtown facility opened in 2010. The four biggest crowds in the BB&T Ballpark era have come on Independence Day:
July 4, 2014 - 8,184 (5-0 L vs. Wilmington)
July 4, 2015 - 8,009 (6-5 W/11 vs. Frederick)
July 4, 2013 - 7,576 (8-5 L/11 vs. Myrtle Beach)
July 4, 2012 - 7,285 (8-4 L vs. Myrtle Beach)
IN-DASH-PENDENCE DAY
For the first time since 2010, the Dash earned a victory on the Fourth of July. This also marked the first time since 2007 that the franchise won a home game on the holiday. Winston was 0-4 in Independence Day games at BB&T Ballpark.
MR. AUTOMATIC
Dash infielder Jake Peter continued his tear by reaching base four times in Saturday's win. Peter has hit safely in 32 of his last 34 games dating back to May 27. During this span, Peter is hitting .336 (43-for-128) with three homers, 20 RBIs and 23 runs scored. As a result, the former Creighton star has raised his overall batting average to .293, which is seventh-best in the Carolina League. Peter's average is as high as it has been since April 20, 10 games into the year. He also stands second on the circuit with 83 hits.
DOUBLE (DIGIT) TROUBLE
For the second time since the start of June, Peter is riding a double-digit hit streak. The former seventh-round pick recorded a 14-game run from June 5-17. This represents the longest hitting streak in the CL this season. Even though Peter plated two runs on June 18, he went 0-for-3 to end this run. However, Peter started a new streak the next day and has not looked back. During his current 12-game surge, the longest active streak in the league, Peter is 17-for-48 (.354) with four RBIs and seven runs.
OTHER OFFENSIVE NOTES
Winston-Salem scored more runs on Saturday than it had since June 15, a span of 15 contests. Adam Engel emphatically broke out of a 3-for-43 slide over his previous 11 games with a three-hit showing, his first such effort since that June 15 game. Trey Michalczewski became the first player in the Dash era to log four walks in a single game. This is the highest walk single-game walk total for a Winston hitter since Brandon Allen coaxed five free passes in a 9-3, 11-inning win over Frederick on July 9, 2008, the final season of the Warthogs.
DASH DOTS
Before Saturday's triumph, Winston-Salem was 0-5 in extra-inning contests in 2015...The Dash had not won in extras since a 4-3, 11-inning victory in Myrtle Beach on August 28, 2014...First baseman Keon Barnum matched a career-high with three RBIs on Saturday.
