Mudcats Suffer Second Straight 12 Run Loss to Pelicans

ZEBULON, NC - Mark Zagunis hit a three run double in the second, Victor Caratini drove in two with a bases loaded single in the fifth and had a solo home run in the eighth as the Pelicans pounded out a 12-0 win against the Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Sunday night.
The game started one hour and 48 minutes late because of rain and was called after the top of the eighth when the rain returned for the second time. The loss was Carolina's third straight overall and second straight in the series. It was also their second straight 12 run loss to the visiting Pelicans (46-34, 5-6).
Lucas Sims started for the Mudcats (39-41, 5-6) and took the loss in his first game back off the disabled list after allowing six earned runs on three hits over three innings. He allowed the first run of the game to score on a wild pitch in the first and then gave up five more runs in the second. Sims (L, 2-4, 6.46) threw 67 pitches (34 strikes), walked three and struck out one over his three inning outing.
Daury Torrez started for the Pelicans and was able to keep the Mudcats scoreless over seven innings pitched. Torrez (W, 6-5, 3.80) scattered three hits and struck out seven while pitching through the seventh inning for the second time this season.
Chesny Young scored the first inning run on one of two run-scoring wild pitches lost by Sims. Young was hit by a pitch in the inning, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and later scored on a two-out wild pitch from Sims. Jordan Hankins drove in the second run of the game with a bases loaded walk and did so moments before Sims allowed a bases loaded, three-run double to Zagunis. Another wild pitch scored Zagunis later in the inning and in all the Pelicans scored five times in the second to take a 6-0 lead.
Zagunis was 1-for-4 with two runs and three RBI in the road win. Caratini chipped in with a bases loaded two-run single against Carolina reliever Britt Robertshaw in the fifth and ripped a solo home run to right off Jorge Zavala before the game was called in the eighth. Caratini was 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBI, a home run and two walks in the Myrtle Beach win.
Carolina used Robertshaw, Dustin Emmons and Zavala out of the bullpen in the loss. Robertshaw pitched through most of the sixth and allowed just one earned run (three total) over two and 2/3 innings pitched.
Emmons relieved Robertshaw in the sixth and was able to go through an inning and 2/3 in his Carolina League debut. He left the game in the eighth with two runners on base, but Zavala allowed both to score on a two run single to right by Jacob Rogers. Emmons was charged with two runs allowed over his near two inning effort.
Zavala pitched the top of the eighth and allowed the two-run single to Rogers and Caratini's solo home run. He threw just one pitch to both Rogers and Caratini and finished with a run allowed on two hits over 2/3 innings pithced.
The Mudcats used four pitchers in Sunday's loss and have used 10 pitchers over the last two games against the Pelicans. They needed three relievers to finish Sunday's shortened game and used four men in relief on Saturday in their 16-4 Independence Day loss.
The Pelicans took a two games to none series lead with Sunday's win and will look for the sweep on Monday night in the series finale. RHP Jeremey Null (0-0, 7.20 ERA) will start for the Pelicans against Carolina starter LHP Blair Walters (4-2, 2.60) on Monday night at Five County Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Zebulon.
