Frederick Keys News Release
Winston-Salem, N.C. -Frederick Keys starter, Mitch Horacek, turned in seven outstanding innings to lead the orange and black to a 5-2 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash on Sunday night at BB&T Ballpark. The loss snapped a two-game slide and forces a Monday rubber game. Turning in seven innings of two-run baseball, Horacek retired the final 16 he faced.
Winston-Salem mustered just two runs and five hits against Horacek and Matt Taylor, as the duo collectively set down 22 of the last 23 Dash hitters. Both runs from Winston-Salem came in the second, as Nolan Early singled to center and moved to second on a throwing error by Adrian Marin at short. Both men advanced on a sac-bunt by Cleuluis Rondon, while singles by Adam Engel and Jake Peter made it 2-0.
Frederick picked up five hits in the first three innings against Dash righty, James Dykstra, before equaling that total in fourth inning alone. Scratching across four runs to take the lead for good, the Keys sent eight men to bat. A single by Jeff Kemp and a double by Brenden Webb started things off, while Kemp scored on a sac-fly by Austin Wynns. An RBI single by Wynston Sawyer and a run-scoring double by Tanner Witt followed, before a base hit by Jay Gonzalez and a groundout by Josh Hart plated the fourth run.
The four runs equaled the club's most productive inning of the second-half, while six of the team's 14 hits went for extra-bases, tying a season-best. All six were two-baggers. Meanwhile, seven of the team's nine starters recorded a hit and five finished with multi-hit games. Kemp and Witt each led the way with three hits in the game, while both finished with a pair of two-baggers each.
Horacek (5-8) equaled his season-high for innings pitching with seven frames, as he scattered four hits and surrendered two unearned runs in a winning effort. He walked one and struck out six. It was his fifth quality start of the season and the fourth this week by a Keys starting pitcher.
Taylor picked up his second professional save, tossing the eighth and ninth innings. He gave up a hit and struck out one.
The Keys and Dash conclude their series on Monday night art BB&T Ballpark. Left-hander Chris Lee (2-4, 4.58) makes the start for Frederick and will be opposed by Dash lefty Jordan Guerrero (1-1, 5.72). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
