AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Winning Continues in Fargo

July 9, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It was almost a second-straight shutout for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Instead, the Fish claimed a 3-2 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field.

With the win, the Goldeyes' record improves to 19-25, while the RedHawks fall to 13-33.

Right-fielder Brady Wilson gave the Goldeyes an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top third. Brad Boyer and Ryan Babineau each added an RBI in the sixth, but the pitchers stole the show.

Winnipeg starter Matt Jackson put up seven strikeouts and held the RedHawks scoreless through six innings in his third win of the season. Jailen Peguero pitched the ninth for Winnipeg to pick up the save. Fargo-Moorhead's Brandon Mann suffered the loss, but pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts.

"He's been working hard," Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea said of Jackson. "He hit a rough patch there with his last four starts or so, but he's been working hard and it showed.

"He just needed to simplify things a little bit and today he kept the ball out of the zone, and the results speak for themselves."

But while Jackson broke out of his rough patch, the Goldeyes fell into one in the bottom ninth as the RedHawks rallied and almost sent the game to extra innings.

Reliever Peguero gave the RedHawks a leadoff base runner on a hit-by-pitch, and the RedHawks scored two consecutive runs to break the shutout. Casey Haerther, Josh Mazzola and Luis Alen put up two outs on a 6-4-3 double play, and Wilson caught the final out to end the inning and give the Goldeyes the 3-2 win.

"It got a little hairy there, but we got the final out," Vermilyea said. "The bullpen came in and shut the door. If you get your starter to go six solid, your bullpen can stay fresh for the rest of the series. That's where you win games."

The Goldeyes will look to win the four-game series against the RedHawks Thursday at 12:30 p.m. Right-hander Anthony Smith will start for the Goldeyes, while the RedHawks will send Tyler Herron to the mound. This game and every Goldeyes game is broadcast live on Jewel 100.5 and called by Steve Schuster.

The Goldeyes return to Winnipeg for an eight-game, nine-day homestand starting Friday at 7 p.m. against the St. Paul Saints. Tickets for Goldeyes home games are available through Ticketmaster via ticketmaster.ca or goldeyes.com, by calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
