Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Lincoln Saltdogs (17-29) held off the Sioux Falls Canaries (20-26) on Thursday evening in route to a 2-1 victory. The Birds' only managed to score one run on six hits, in front of 2,916 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Saltdogs starter Luis Chirinos (3-4, 4.99 ERA) was able to hold off the Canaries batters by throwing in the low-mid 90's most of the night. Chirinos only allowed six hits and an earned run in his ninth start for Lincoln.
Lincoln cruised to a fast start in the top of the first when Curt Smith hit a deep fly ball that allowed Matt Forgatch to score from third. Jeremy Hamilton followed with a single, and Mike Gilmartin scored on a throwing error from RJ Perucki. Mike Gilmartin paced the Saltdog offense by going 2-for-4 with a run. In all, Lincoln tallied two runs on nine hits and committed no errors in the field.
Sioux Falls put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Jerome Pena laced a double to deep center field that allowed Chris Grayson to score from second. Ultimately, that was all for Sioux Falls as they picked up one run on six hits, and left ten runners on base.
Birds' starter Miguel Pena (5-4, 2.57 ERA) was able to settle down as he worked out of many jams, stranding eight Lincoln runners on base throughout the contest. Pena ultimately picked up the loss as he finished the night by throwing seven innings, giving up nine hits and two earned runs.
Canaries' relief pitcher Cameron McVey came onto relief in the eighth and ninth innings, pitching a scoreless two innings while striking out three Lincoln hitters. It wasn't quite enough as the Birds' went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The Canaries will send RHP Stephen Bougher (2-1, 5.71 ERA) to the mound in search of his third win for Sioux Falls. The Birds' hit the road for a four game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats with first pitch beginning at 7:10 PM on Friday evening.
