Saints Claim 14th Consecutive Series Victory with 5-3 Win over Champions

ST. PAUL, MN (July 9, 2015) - Three game series or four game series it's all the same to the St. Paul Saints. In their first of five straight four game series the St. Paul Saints took three out of four from the Ottawa Champions, winning 5-3 on Thursday night at CHS Field in front of 8,848 at CHS Field. The Saints have now won all 14 series they've played, improved to 36-10 on the season and increased their lead in the North Division to 16.0 games.

The Saints got a masterful pitching performance from starter Jeff Shields. The lone earned run he gave up came in the third with the Saints leading 1-0. Chris Winder led off with a double. He was sacrificed to third by Daniel Bick and scored on a sacrifice fly from Albert Cartwright to tie the game at one.

With the Saints leading 2-1 in the sixth Shields' usually solid defense was a little shaky. Sebastian Boucher reached on a fielding error by the sure-handed shortstop Anthony Phillips. Mike Schwartz walked. Bryce Massanari flew out to right and Kvasnicka tried to double up Schwartz at first, but he misfired and his throwing error allowed the runners to advance. A groundout by Jon Talley scored Boucher to tie the game at two. That was all Shields would allow going 7.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two and striking out three. He improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

The Saints got off to a good start in the first on a solo homer from Vinny DiFazio, his ninth of the season, to make it 1-0.

In the fifth, with the game tied at one, the Saints loaded the bases when Dan Kaczrowski was hit by a pitch, Willie Argo singled and DiFazio walked. A wild pitch scored Kaczrowski to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.

In the sixth, with the game tied at two, Angelo Songco led off with a single to right He moved to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a single by Joey Paciorek. He finished the night 3-4. A sac fly by Anthony Phillips gave the Saints a 3-2 lead.

The Saints got two insurance runs in the seventh when Willie Argo led off with a single. He stole second and, with two outs, Songco was walked intentionally. The move didn't pay off as Mike Kvasnicka roped a two-run double to give the Saints a 5-2 lead.

In the ninth Ryan Rodebaugh pitched a perfect inning of relief to record his 11th save of the season.

The Saints head to Shaw Park to take on the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a four game series beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (4-1, 3.27) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Cody Cowgill (2-1, 4.50). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
