Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - It was Tyler Herron's day on Thursday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. The right-hander went the distance and threw a complete game shutout as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks won the series finale with the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,441.
The RedHawks jumped on the board first getting to Winnipeg starter Tony Smith providing Herron with some early run support. Drew Muren and Zach Penprase led off the game with back-to-back singles. Bonfe moved Penprase to third on a fielder's choice and Joe Dunigan followed by belting a single to left scoring Muren with two outs. The two-out bingo would continue with recently signed catcher ZachWright. He stepped to the dish next and sent a bloop single to right that would score Bonfe easily and would send Dunigan to third. Staley kept it going with a two-out single slapped to right scoring Dunigan and making it 3-0.
Those would be the only runs Herron needed, but they would add more. In the third, Joe Bonfe led off the frame with a walk, and two batters later would be driven in on a sacrifice fly to right making it 4-0.
Herron would continue to pitch well backed by the run support. Herron would set the Goldeyes' down 1-2-3 in the third, fifth, seventh and eighth innings, aided by tailor made 6-4-3 and 4-6-3 double plays in the fifth and seventh. He allowed seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts on 117 pitches, 81 of them being strikes.
It was Herron's first time working with new catcher Zach Wright. Wright was recently in the Los Angeles Angels organization in Double-A and was playing in his first series. Herron said on his start and on his first time working with Wright, "Really had my fastball going for me today, and the new catcher helped me out. The game he called was great, I felt like we were on the same page the whole game. It's great to have him here."
The RedHawks would add two more in the sixth. Frazier Hall and Frank Salerno began the inning with back-to-back doubles and would advance to second and third on a perfectly laid down sacrifice bunt from Brent Peterson. With the infield playing, Zach Penprase stepped to the dish and laced a grounder in between short and third scoring two and giving them a 6-0 lead.
Herron (3-4, 3.98 ERA) earned the win while Smith (2-1, 3.41 ERA) took the loss for the Goldeyes.
The RedHawks split with the Goldeyes 2-2, their first split series of the 2015 season. Fargo-Moorhead improves to 14-33 while Winnipeg drops to 19-26. The RedHawks will welcome the Ottawa Champions of the Can-Am League to town for a three game series starting tomorrow night. Tyler Alexander will take the mound for the RedHawks.
