Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS (July 9, 2015) - The Wichita Wingnuts compete every season to try and win the American Association championship. Aside from trophies and titles, the biggest badge of honor an independent club can earn is a reputation for having many players sign with Major League organizations. The Wingnuts reputation for moving players into affiliated ball was appealing to right-handed pitcher Alex Koronis, who will be trying to get back to into the affiliated ranks after not playing professionally since 2012. The former Tampa Bay prospect signed with the club on Thursday.

After starring for Monsignor Pace High School, Koronis was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 40th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. The 27-year old native of New York City chose to go the college route instead, enrolling at the University of Miami for his freshman season. That season he was 3-2 with a 9.00 ERA and struck out 22 in 30.0 innings. After one more campaign with the Hurricanes, he decided Miami was not the right fit and transferred to the Division II University of Tampa. He combined to go 12-5 in three college seasons.

The Rays selected him in the 11th round in 2009 and Koronis signed, beginning his career at the rookie level with Princeton where he was impressive in 15 relief outings. After working out of the bullpen in 43 games the next year for Single-A Bowling Green, Koronis joined High-A Charlotte for the 2011 season. In his only season as a starting pitcher with the Rays he posted a 5.04 ERA and a record of 7-8. He struck out 111 in 126.2 innings.

2012 saw the right-hander open the season with Double-A Montgomery before heading back to Charlotte down the stretch. At the conclusion of the year, Koronis decided to step away from the game for a couple of years. He began playing semi-pro baseball in Florida and caught the eye of the Wichita coaching staff with his low 90s fastball.

Koronis will start Thursday night's game as the Wingnuts aim for the sweep of Laredo. The game will feature Shiner Bock for a buck and dollar wings.
