WHEELING, WV- The Kalamazoo Wings earned nine power plays on Friday night, and took advantage of the chances, capitalizing four times. Those tallies helped the visitors hold off the Wheeling Nailers, as the home team suffered its first setback of the season, 6-5, in front of 2,686 fans at WesBanco Arena.

Offense was the name of the game in the first period, as the two teams combined to light the lamp five times. Dean Strong opened the scoring 1:17 into the game for the Wings, knocking in the rebound of Sam Ftorek's initial shot. The Nailers had an answer 28 seconds later. Chris Barton won an offensive zone face-off, and Olivier Dame-Malka set up Nick Plastino, who rifled in a slap shot from the point, beating Riley Gill stick side.

Later in the period, Kalamazoo scored twice in a matter of 13 seconds. While on the power play, Sam Ftorek netted the first goal, finishing off a cross-crease feed from Brandon Svendsen. The second tally came off the stick of Kory Karlander, who dribbled in the rebound of Darryl Bootland's initial shot. Wheeling was able to get back within one before the buzzer sounded, as Zack Torquato scored off the rebound of Zach Hansen's shot from the blueline.

The scoring continued in the second period, as the Wings extended their lead. Patrick Asselin scored Kalamazoo's fourth goal of the game, finishing off a very quick passing play with Trent Daavettila and Sam Ftorek, while the visitors were playing with a two-man advantage. Less than a minute later, the Nailers cut into the deficit, as Denver Manderson buried his first professional goal on a shorthanded breakaway.

Before the middle frame came to an end, Kalamazoo potted two more goals, with both coming on the power play. Brandon Svendson scored the first one, depositing Patrick Asselin's pass at the side of the crease. 30 seconds later, Trent Daavettila got into the act, deflecting in Asselin's initial shot on a rush into the offensive zone.

In the third period, the Nailers battled back, and ultimately got within a goal. Nick Plastino started the third period scoring by netting a wrist shot from the point for his second marker of the evening. Then, at the 9:58 mark of the stanza, Matt Lombardi backhanded the puck through the slot to Mickael Bedard, who tapped in a shot at the side of the crease. Unfortunately, Wheeling was unable to get any closer, as Kalamazoo escaped on top, 6-5.

Riley Gill got the win, stopping 28 of the 33 shots he faced for the Wings. Patrick Killeen took the loss for the Nailers, allowing six goals on 16 shots in two periods. Peter Delmas was perfect on nine shots in relief during the third period.

The Nailers will head to Trenton on Saturday for a 7:00 face-off against the Titans, opening up a four-game road trip. Wheeling's next home game takes place on November 15th at 11:05 against the Elmira Jackals.
