Ontario Reign News Release
Loveland, CO - The Ontario Reign (3-2-1-0), proud affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, beat the Colorado Eagles (4-4-0-0) 4-1 before 5,289 at the Budweiser Events Center Friday Night. C.J. Stretch, Derek Couture and J.D. Watt recoreded two assists each in the win.
The Reign came out swinging in Colorado...literally, as Chris Cloud picked a fight with Jason Beatty just 51 seconds into the game. Watt and Jean-Phillipe Cote also dropped the gloves in the first period for what was one of the most physical games Ontario has played this season.
Colorado took a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal by Riley Nelson at 13:01 of the first period, but Ontario dominated the second period, scoring four goals on 20 shots. Tarasuk got the Reign offense going with a power-play goal at 3:34, as he scored off of a pass from Couture. Bill Bagron gave Ontario its first lead at 7:59 when Watt skated toward the back of the Colorado net and flipped the puck behind goaltender Andrew Penner to Bagron who made it count.
The Eagles defense seemed to relax late in the frame, giving way to goals by Geoff Irwin and Bagron to extend the Reign lead to 4-1. Stretch went into the corner and made a seeing-eye pass to Irwin who put the puck into the top corner of the net at 16:18. Colorado turned the puck over in the neutral zone and Bagron finished off a 3-on-1 at 19:07 with his second goal of the contest and fourth of the season.
Ontario goaltender Darcy Kuemper held Colorado's offensive dynamos Jack Combs and Chad Costello scoreless and earned his third consecutive win of the season with 24 saves on 25 shots. Penner turned aside 31 of the 35 shots he faced in his first loss of the season.
