WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Wingnuts (48-40) sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring four times on four hits and one error as they rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones (41-47) on Wednesday night.
Kansas City opened the scoring when Keanon Simon tripled with two outs in the third and scored on an RBI single by former Wingnut Jose Duran. The T-Bones scored three more runs two innings later to chase starter Marcos Tabata and claim a 4-0 advantage. Duran, Ray Sadler and Jim Fasano each collected RBI doubles in the frame.
Tabata surrendered four runs on six hits over four and two-thirds innings but did not factor into the decision.
Reid Santos held the Wingnuts scoreless until a two-run fifth pulled Wichita within two, 4-2. Santos left after six innings having allowed two runs on just three hits while walking six. The left-hander had to settle for a no-decision.
After an RBI single by Rico Washington pushed the score to 5-2 in the top of the seventh, Wichita struck the decisive blow against relievers Steven Stewart (4-5) and Brian Grening. Stewart surrendered a leadoff double before inducing a groundout from former teammate Jimmy Mojica. The next three batters reached while an RBI double by Juan Richardson brought the score to 5-3.
Grening entered with the bases loaded and one out and quickly secured the second out on a flyout to right. Mitch Einertson followed with an RBI single that kept the bases loaded for pinch-hitter Josh Workman. Workman singled to bring home the tying run while an error on the play allowed the go-ahead run to score as well.
Stewart was charged with four runs, three earned, on two hits in one-third of an inning in the loss. Kendy Batista (1-3) allowed one run on one hit in two innings of relief to pick up the victory for Wichita. Josh Dew threw a scoreless ninth to secure his 18th save of the season.
The T-Bones send Kris Johnson (4-3, 3.31) to the hill to face Derek Blacksher (7-8, 4.41) and Wichita in the rubber match of the three-game series on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05.
