Saltdogs Howell Sold to the Boston Red Sox

DURHAM, NC - The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today that the contract of Lincoln Saltdogs catcher Jeff Howell has been purchased by the Boston Red Sox. Howell is the four Lincoln player sold during the 2011 campaign and will report to Double A Portland in the Eastern League

Howell batted .269 with five home runs and 19 RBIs in 31 games for the Saltdogs. In 130 at-bats, the Satellite Beach, FL resident collected 35 hits while scoring 24 runs and walking nine times. He started the season with the St. Paul Saints where he played in 21 games.

The 28-year-old was a 10th round pick of the Kansas City Royals in the 2005 MLB draft. Howell spent the past five seasons in the Royals organization. He becomes the 11th player sold to a major league organization since the beginning of the 2011 season.
