St. Paul Saints News Release

WINNIPEG, MB (August 17, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints are hoping this is some bad dream in which they will wake up from soon, but the reality is they failed to win a game during a six game roadtrip and have now lost eight consecutive games away from Midway Stadium, tied for the third longest stretch in franchise history, with a 7-4 loss to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Wednesday night at Shaw Park.

For the second consecutive night the Saints came out with the long ball and it was Ole Sheldon who hit a solo homer in the first, just like he did on Tuesday, his 11th of the season, to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

In the second the Saints went back-to-back as Richard Mercado hit a solo homer, his eighth of the season and second in as many nights. Ronnie Bourquin followed that up with a solo shot of his own, his 10th of the season. It was the third time this season the Saints went back-to-back and gave them a 3-0 lead.

Disaster would strike in the bottom of the inning as Wes Long and Fehlandt Lentini led off by reaching on errors by shortstop Steve Mays. Louis Ott singled home Long to make it 3-1. Luis Alen followed with an RBI single of his own and two batters later Price Kendall tied it with an RBI groundout.

Mercado came calling again in the fourth when he hit his second homer of the night, third in two games and his ninth of the season giving the Saints a 4-3 lead. With two outs Donald Blunt doubled to center, but was left stranded. The double was the final hit of the night for the Saints.

The lead didn't last long because in the bottom of the inning Ott grounded a ball just over the glove of Mercado at first and down the line for a triple. He scored on a single from Alen to tie the game at four.

The Goldeyes took the lead for good off of Saints starter Matt Long in the fifth when Brian Myrow walked and stole second. Long was hit by a pitch and Lentini's single loaded the bases. Ott walked to force in a run and give the Goldeyes a 5-4 lead.

In the sixth inning Matt Long loaded the bases with one out on two singles and an intentional walk and Wes Long's sacrifice fly made it 6-4. Matt long departed after 6.0 innings allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits while walking three. The loss was his 10th of the season, setting a new single-season franchise record.

The Saints take Thursday off and will head home for a three game series beginning on Friday at Midway Stadium against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beginning at 7:05 p.m. It is Friday Night Fireworks presented by Xcel Energy. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
