St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (16-15) had their six-game winning streak halted in a 9-7 loss to the St. Paul Saints (15-17) on Tuesday afternoon in St. Paul. Canaries first baseman Patrick Reilly went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the loss.

The Canaries jumped way out in front in the top of the first inning. Kennard Bibbs reached on an error and advanced into scoring position on a single by Josh Patton. Beau Torbert followed with a single to score Bibbs for a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Reilly tripled to score Patton and Torbert to extend the Canaries lead to three. Reilly scored on a double by Paul Smyth, and Smyth came in when Tim Hutting reached on an error by Saints third baseman Ben Thomas. After a half inning, the Canaries led, 5-0.

St. Paul rallied in the bottom of the first inning. Ron Fenwick led off with a single, and Pichi Balet followed with a single of his own. On Balet's single Tim Hutting threw the ball away trying to force out Fenwick at second base. Fenwick was able to advance to third on the error. Fenwick scored on an RBI single by Brent Krause and it was 5-1 Canaries. Adam Hale added a single to score Balet, making it a three-run game, 5-2. Krause got to third on the play, with Hale advancing to second on the throw to third. A groundout by Kevin Sullivan brought home Krause, and a wild pitch allowed Hale to score. After one inning, the Canaries lead was one, 5-4.

The Saints went ahead in the fourth. Ryan Priddy doubled and scored on a single by Fenwick to tie the game, 5-5. Later in the inning, Adam Hale hit a two-run homer to put the Saints ahead to stay, 7-5.

St. Paul got another run in the fifth inning. Heath Keel reached on a fielder's choice and scored on Fenwick's second RBI single of the game to put the Saints ahead, 8-5.

Both teams scored in the sixth. Smyth singled and scored on a double by Bibbs to get the Canaries within two, 8-6. The Saints got the run back thanks to two Canaries errors in the bottom of the inning. Brent Krause reached on an error by Patrick Reilly. Then as Krause stole second, a throwing error by Paul Smyth allowed him to third. When Kevin Sullivan grounded into a double play, Krause scored for a 9-6 lead.

The Canaries threatened in the ninth inning. The Birds loaded the bases on a walk to Grant Richardson and singles by Torbert and Ben Van Iderstine. Patrick Reilly singled to score Richardson, pulling the Canaries within two, 9-7. However, Smyth struck out and Hutting grounded out, and the Canaries left the bases loaded in the 9-7 loss.

Jeff Blitstein (1-1) allowed just two hits after the first inning to get his first win of the year. Ben Moore (7-7) gave up seven runs in four innings in suffering the loss. Mike Bille pitched the ninth inning for St. Paul to record his second save of the season.

The Canaries are back at home on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. when they will host the Lincoln Saltdogs in "Parrot Heads & Pirates" night at the Birdcage. The game will mark the return of manager Steve Shirley who has been on a medical leave since the Canaries clinched the First Half North Division Championship on June 26.
