Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
TULSA, OK - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs built a 4-0 lead and scored twice in each period on their way to a 6-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers Friday night at the BOK Center. With their 16th straight victory against the Oilers, the Mudbugs also matched the longest winning streak in the CHL this season at eight straight games.
David Rutherford scored two goals and set up another to lead the way offensively. Steven Crampton, Jeff Martens, Jeff Kyrzakos and Justin Aikins all had multiple points as well as Bossier-Shreveport improved to 9-1 on the road this season.
The âBugs outshot Tulsa 11-5 in the first period and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. David Rutherford opened the scoring for the visitors, stickhandling through the slot before beating Ian Keserich through the five-hole at 6:35. A late Tulsa penalty set up a goal in the final minute of the period as Clay Plume's wrister from the point was re-directed perfectly by Steven Crampton in front to send the Mudbugs into the locker room with a two-goal advantage.
Bossier-Shreveport picked up right where they left off in the second as Jeff Kyrzakos beat Keserich from just inside the blueline at 5:36 to make it 3-0. Rutherford's second goal of the night and league-leading 14th of the season increased the edge to 4-0 three minutes later as he received a nifty pass from Travis Clayton before backhanding the puck into the net. Keserich was then replaced in goal by Tyler Sims. Tulsa got on the board with a powerplay goal from Derek Eastman and the âBugs led 4-1 after two periods.
Gary Steffes cut the lead to 4-2 early in the third to get Tulsa back in the game, but Jim Jorgensen's first goal of the season on a blast from the right boards at 10:55 put the Mudbugs comfortably in front once again. On the rush with Rutherford later in the third, Martens capped the scoring for his eighth goal of the year to complete the 6-2 win.
John DeCaro stopped 21 shots to earn his fourth straight win and improve to 5-1 for the season. Keserich made 12 saves but took the loss before Sims came in to make 11 more stops. Bossier-Shreveport converted 2 of 3 powerplay chances, while Tulsa finished 1 for 3. The âBugs outshot the Oilers 29-23.
The Mudbugs will now head back to Texas to face the Brahmas for the second time this week tomorrow night at the NyTex Sports Centre. Opening faceoff will be shortly after 7:35 pm as the Brahmas honor their former Captain and former Mudbugs defenseman Craig Minard, who recently retired, before the game. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:15 on AM 1130 KWKH and the game will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
