Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo.- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (7-8-2) fell to the Missouri Mavericks (8-6-2) on Friday night despite a three-point effort by Darcy Campbell and 38 saves from Dan Rosen. For the Mavericks, Walter Wintoneak potted three goals for the hat trick and Gerry Festa made 23 saves against the Bees.
The Killer Bees made an addition to the line-up early this afternoon with forward Nick Sucharski joining the team. Sucharski wasted no time making an impact scoring the Bees first goal of the game at the 4:30 mark of the first period on a deflected goal. Jake Obermeyer ripped a shot from the point that Sucharski deflected passed Mavericks goalie Gerry Festa. Zak McClellan added an assist to his collegiate teammate's goal.
The Bees made is a 2-0 lead with a power-play strike at 5:40 of the first. With the two-man advantage Darcy Campbell walked the puck to the top of the circles before snapping a slap shot that hit off the inside post to the back of the net. Tomas Klempa fed the puck to Campbell to earn the assist.
The Mavs would cut the lead in half before the horn to end the period would sound. Ryan Jardine saw Walker Wintoneak on the backdoor and was able to find him to beat Dan Rosen at the 16:20 mark.
The second period was not one for the goaltenders as the two teams combined for five goals, three for the Mavs and two for the Bees as the period ended tied at four.
The Mavericks tied the game at 1:53 with a Mike Berry goal. Darcy Campbell scored his second goal for the Bees at 2:31 to give the Bees the lead once again at 3-2.
The Bees would watch Walker Wintoneak score the next two goals and complete the hat trick with his second and third goal. As a plus for the Mavericks, they would also take their first lead of the game after the third Wintoneak goal.
The Bees would tie the game with the second power play strike at 18:36 of the second, once again with the two-man advantage. Ryan McLeod scored with assists to Darcy Campbell and Aaron Lee. Campbell registered his third point of the game.
After the first two periods were filled with goals the third was most lacking. Only one goal was scored and it proved to be the game winner scored by Carlyle Lewis of the Missouri Mavericks at the 9:48 mark of the third.
The Bees and Mavericks will meet again on Saturday night at the IEC starting at 7:05. Fans can follow the game on Real Country 102.1-FM, CHL-TV, and chl.com will have live statistics.
