Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs snapped a four-game home losing streak on the strength of three power-play goals and a shorthanded marker in a 5-1 win over the Allen Americans Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center.
Arizona finished 3-for-8 with the man advantage and held Allen's third-ranked power-play scoreless on five opportunities.
Doug Groenestege turned aside 30 of 31 shots in his first start in net for Arizona since a 2-1 overtime loss to the Quad City Mallards on November 13.
Mark Kolanos and Cam Keith each tallied a pair of goals while Luke Erickson extended his point streak to five games with a trio of helpers in the win. Since being acquired by the Sundogs on November 10, Erickson has averaged two points per game with 10 points (4g/6a) in five contests.
Alexandr Quesnel tallied Allen's goal to give his club a 1-0 lead midway through the first period, firing a quick turnaround shot along the ice from the far boards that found its way through traffic and past Groenestege.
Kolanos capitalized on a late power play to even the score at one on a tic-tac-toe passing play with 2:45 to play in the opening frame. Maxime Renaud and Tyler Butler traded passes along the blue line before Renaud found Kolanos at the right post for the forward's seventh goal of the season.
Tallying twice in the middle frame, Arizona opened a 3-1 through 40 minutes of play.
With the Americans on their third power play of the game, Corey Laurysen collected Arizona's second shorthanded marker of the season for a 2-1 lead at 12:54 of the second period. Laurysen and Joey Sides skated up the ice 2-on-1 before Laurysen crossed the blue line and snapped a wrist high far post past the glove of Chris Whitley for his first point of the season.
Kolanos picked up his second goal of the contest with 2:10 to play in the period, collapsing on a Joel Irving rebound at the right circle before striding across the top of the goal crease and sneaking a backhand effort between Whitley and the far post.
Keith recorded a pair of power-play goals less than four minutes apart in the third period, redirecting two shots from the blue line to secure his club's first win at home since October 22.
His first came with 13:31 to play in the final frame, deflecting a Butler shot from the point inside the far post for a three-goal lead.
Keith picked up his second of the period and fourth of the year just past the midway point, knocking a Kyle Hood shot from the near boards past Whitley to close out scoring in the contest.
Whitley dropped his third game of the year, allowing five goals on 30 shots.
With the win, Arizona (6-8-2) moves into a three-way tie for fifth place in the Berry Conference and sits just two points back of fourth-place Rio Grande Valley and four points back of third-place Texas. The Sundogs close out a three-game set against the Americans (14-4-0) tomorrow at 7:05pm.
