Wilmington Offense Struggles Again in Third Straight Setback
May 10, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE- For the second straight game the Wilmington Blue Rocks scored multiple runs in the opening inning and then not again the rest of the way. The result on Friday was the same as the night before as the Blue Crew dropped a 7-2 decision to the Potomac Nationals at Frawley Stadium. It was the third consecutive setback for Wilmington, but the Rocks are still two games clear of Lynchburg in the CL North standings.
Dennicher Carrasco got the Rocks on top in the bottom of the first. His two-out single plated Nick Pratto and Seuly Matias to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead. The Blue Crew offense could muster just two hits the rest of the night. Potomac starter Kyle Johnson yielded just the two scores on three knocks over six frame to earn the win. P-Nats pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts and Wilmington has now fanned 58 times over the last three contests.
Potomac got to Blue Crew starter Jackson Kowar (2-2) for five runs (although only three of them were earned) over four frames. The righty fanned six, but walked three and yielded seven hits. KJ Harrison had three hits and drove in three to lead the Nationals attack while Cole Freeman added two hits, two walks and scored three times.
Wilmington continues its seven-game homestand on Saturday against the Nationals at 6:05 p.m. first pitch at Frawley Stadium. Left-hander Marcelo Martinez (1-0, 2.93) gets the ball for the Blue Crew. Tickets are available at BlueRocks.com and fans that don't make it to the ballpark can catch all the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks Cory Nidoh on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Despite spending two-thirds of the season atop the Carolina League North standings, the Wilmington offense continues to be a work in progress this season. The Rocks managed just four hits on Friday, which was the third straight time Wilmington has managed five knocks or fewer in a contest and 15th time in 2019. The Rocks also managed just one hit with runners in scoring position and have just 11 total knocks with men at second and/or third base in their last 11 games. Overall the Blue Crew attack is last in the Carolina League with a collective .196 batting average. Wilmington is also last in the loop in on-base percentage, runs, hits and extra-base knocks.
The Rocks defense continues to struggle in 2019. Wilmington committed another error that led to a pair of unearned runs on Friday. That came after the team had five in its three-game series against Salem. The Blue Crew is last in the Carolina League with 54 total defensive miscues. The club has committed at least three errors in eight different contests, multiple defensive miscues in 15 games and one in all but seven.
Dennicher Carrasco continues to perform at the plate for the Rocks. Carrasco drove in Wilmington's two first-inning runs and now has eight hits with four RBI and five runs scored in the Blue Crew's last five games.
Wilmington has had an odd schedule to start the 2019 season. Wilmington opened the campaign with a series against Salem and then played 17 consecutive games against CL South opponents. The Rocks went 9-8 during that stretch. The Blue Crew are now in the midst of playing 24 out of 27 against the CL North. The Rocks are 10-5 so far during this divisional-heavy portion of the slate and 8-7 on the year against CL North foes.
