Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
The Edmonton Oil Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers took a trip down memory lane Saturday night, and a hockey game broke out.
Josh Williams, Brett Kemp and Parker Gavlas each scored against their former clubs but the Tigers (40-19-2-1) were the team to emerge with the coveted pair of points, downing the Oil Kings (42-12-6-4), 4-1 in front of 3,230 fans at Canalta Centre.
It was the first time Sebastian Cossa (21-6-2-1) suffered back-to-back losses this season, although he certainly carried his part of the workload by facing 48 shots and making 44 saves.
In the opposing end Mads Sogaard (21-13-1-1) picked up the win, surrendering one goal on 37 shots.
Similar to their loss on Wednesday to the Spokane Chiefs, the second period proved to be a difference maker in the Oil Kings fortunes. The Chiefs utilized a four-goal second frame as a catalyst in their victory, while tonight the Tigers rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit before tagging the visitors for three goals in the second period en route to the win.
Williams got the Oil Kings on the board first - and early - against his former team, skating in on a 2-on-1 with Matthew Robertson and elected to shoot, beating Sogaard just 40 seconds into the game for his 25th of the season.
It was the lone goal of the opening frame, which saw the visitors control the shot clock, 13-11.
In the second period the shot clock was a different story, however, as the Tigers took control in that department, and in the goal scoring department as well.
It started with a Medicine Hat power play goal to tie the game, 1-1, as the former Oil King Kemp notched his 30th of the season at 3:18.
Under five minutes later the Tigers took a 2-1 lead after a turnover deep in the Oil Kings end, then added to their lead with 5:04 remaining in the period to make it 3-1, sending the game into the second intermission.
Shots on goal in the second period favoured Medicine Hat, 23-10, and 34-23 after 40 minutes.
In the third, the Tigers extended their lead to 4-1 on a scoring chance that Cossa couldn't be faulted on at 5:47 of the frame, rounding out the game's scoring.
Shots on goal in the final period of play were 14-14, for a game total of 48-37, Tigers.
Medicine Hat was 1-for-4 on the power play, while Edmonton was 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
Mads Sogaard (MH) (3), Brett Kemp (MH) (2), and Parker Gavlas (MH) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.
Wyatt McLeod, Matthew Robertson and Ethan Cap each wore an "A" and skated as alternates to captain Scott Atkinson.
