Portland, OR- The Western Hockey League is very pleased to present the WHL Distinguished Service Award to longtime member of the Portland Winterhawks organization and radio play by play announcer, Dean "Scooter" Vrooman. The presentation will be held on Saturday, March 7th at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum for a home match-up of the Winterhawks versus the Victoria Royals at 6pm.
This award is presented annually to individuals who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes on behalf of WHL franchises and in doing so have made an extraordinary contribution at the Club and League level over an extended period of time.
The Western Hockey League is very pleased to present the WHL Distinguished Service Award to longtime member of the Portland Winterhawks organization and radio play by play announcer, Dean "Scooter" Vrooman.
Dean served as the Winterhawks' radio play-by-play announcer from 1982 to 2008 and 2012 to 2019. During his 32 years of total service, he rode more than one million miles on team buses through Western Hockey League cities, was on the microphone for both of the Winterhawks' Memorial Cup championships, and helped bring the game night broadcasts to Portland hockey fans while the Winterhawks were on the road. He could also be found at local schools, youth centers and charity events helping introduce the sport of hockey to tens of thousands of children and adults in the community.
While Scooter may have retired from day-to-day service in May of 2019, he continues to serve the Winterhawks and the WHL as the primary liaison between the organization and its alumni players, as well as helping organize team community and charity events. Dean "Scooter" Vrooman is synonymous with the sport of hockey in Portland and his contributions are immeasurable to the game, the team and the league.
"There is nothing more gratifying than seeing someone like Dean "Scooter" Vrooman receive the recognition he deserves for his decades of great service to the Portland Winterhawks and the Western Hockey League. The years he spent as the radio voice of the Hawks has left an indelible mark on the history of our franchise. We congratulate Scooter for receiving the Distinguished Service award," President, Doug Piper.
