Wheat Kings Score Overtime Win in Prince Albert
March 7, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Prince Albert, SK. - The Brandon Wheat Kings kicked off a weekend home and home series with the defending champion Raiders with a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory Friday night in Prince Albert.
Ridly Greig's second goal of the game - 39 seconds into overtime - lifted Brandon to its fourth straight victory and with the extra point, moved to within four points of the front running Raiders in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.
The two teams will close out the weekend series Saturday night at Westoba Place.
Elsewhere in the WHL Friday night - both third place Winnipeg and fourth place Saskatoon came up winners so the Wheat Kings lead on both the ICE and Blades remain five and seven points with two weeks remaining in the 2010-20 regular season.
16-year old rookie Jake Chiasson rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who improved to 35-21-4-2, while Brayden Watts scored both goals in a losing cause for the hometown Raiders.
Brandon coach Dave Lowry says it was an excellent effort by the entire team, from start to finish.
"I liked the way we played from start to finish," Lowry told the Brandon Sun following the game. "We were involved in the game emotionally and physically, skated and we played a real solid road game."
Friday's game marked the return of Vegas prospect Macus Kallionkieli and Ty Thorpe to the lineup and that allowed the Wheat Kings to roll four lines up front.
Lowry says that was a key Friday night.
"When you have 12 forwards in your lineup, it's easy," Lowry said. "We didn't have 12 healthy forwards for a while so it's hard to play four lines."
Both players had been nursing injuries.
Netminder Jiri Patera picked up the win, turning aside 25 shots while Max Paddock turned aside 32 for the Raiders. Both teams came up empty with the man advantage.
Tickets to Saturday night's rematch go back on sale Saturday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
Saturday is another Family Night at Westoba. There will be a pre-game party on the concourse, courtesy of Jumparoo, specials on children's concession items, kids' tickets are just $5 (plus agency fee) and for those that purchase one at the box office, they will receive a "free" Happy Meal from McDonalds.
