Wild Things Win Battle Of The Long Ball

WASHINGTON, PA - On the final day of the season the ball was flying out of Consol Energy Park as the Florence Freedom and Washington Wild Things combined to hit six home runs.

In the end, Washington came away with the 8-5 victory over the Freedom.

Justin Pickett gave Florence an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the second inning.

Matt Sutton tied the game in the fourth with the first of his two homers. Washington would go on and put up four runs in the inning off Preston Vancil to take a 4-1 lead. The final three runs all scored with two outs with Washington managing nine hits throughout the game with two gone.

Grant Psomas chased Vancil in the fifth, Psomas homered for the second straight game to make it 6-1.

Pickett came back up for the Freedom in the sixth, this time with two on, and sent a ball that just cleared the right field wall for his second homer of the game. It was Pickett's 26th home run of the season, tying Kelly Hunt's 2008 mark for the Freedom's single season record.

Washington again answered a Pickett homer with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sutton stepped up to the plate again and took John Tesseyman's pitch out to right to make it 8-4 Wild Things. Sutton finished with four hits and three RBIs.

Billy Mottram tied Trevor Hall's single season RBI record for the Freedom with a solo homer in the eighth inning. Mottram's 23rd homer of the season gave him 79 RBIs for 2009.

Michael Lucas tossed the final 1 1/3 innings for the Wild Things out of the pen to earn his first save of the season. Craig Snipp (3-4) started for Washington and earned the win going five. Vancil (6-4) took the loss going four plus innings and allowing six runs on a season high seven hits.

Florence (49-47) finished its season in third place in the Frontier League East Division and 7-5 against the Wild Things. The Freedom only had a sub .500 record against two teams in the league this season going 3-9 against Kalamazoo and Lake Erie.
