Crushers Finish Season with Win
September 6, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH-The Lake Erie Crushers capped off a superb inaugural season on Sunday with a 6-1 victory over the Midwest Sliders on Fan Appreciation Day at All Pro Freight Stadium. The Crushers now head to the playoffs as one of the two Wild Card teams in the Frontier League and will square off with East Division Champion Kalamazoo starting on Tuesday at Homer Stryker Field.
"It has been crazy, all the way from the beginning," Lake Erie first baseman Gordie Gronkowski said. "Practicing on a high school field and coming out struggling and getting to know each other. We were able to put it all together and come up with a second place finish. It's a great feeling. The guys deserve it. The fans deserve it for all the support they have given."
The Crushers got a superb pitching performance from right-handed rookie Chris Rigo on Sunday as the Westlake, OH native went six scoreless innings allowing only one hit. Zack Pace started the game with a leadoff hit, but after he was thrown out trying to steal third, Rigo would not allow another baserunner as he retired the next 17 hitters in a row.
Lake Erie's offense scratched out single runs in the first and third innings. Gronkowski brought home Wayne Bond in the first on an RBI fielder's choice and would add a sacrifice fly in the third that plated Jesse Gibson. The Crushers tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a solo homer by Bond and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Johnson. They continued picking away at Midwest in the sixth as Nick Maragas scored on an attempted double steal after Scott McIlvain was thrown out at second.
Midwest scored their only run of the game in the seventh as Robbie Knapp hit an RBI single off of Alberto Rolon to draw the Sliders to within 5-1. Kylee Hash closed out the scoring in the eighth inning as the Crushers catcher brought home Arden McWilliams with an RBI double.
The Crushers close out the regular season with a final record of 57-38. They will play games one and two in Kalamazoo on Tuesday and Wednesday, before returning home to Avon for game three on Friday and if necessary, game four on Saturday. If a game five is necessary, it would be played on Monday September 14th in Kalamazoo.
